The Magic of Cats
By: Andrew Anderson – Moon Books, $14.95
Description: Discover the Cat of the Night and the Cat of the Day. Over the centuries, the relationship between cats and humans has been one of profound change, of both darkness and light. In Ancient Egypt, we worshiped them as the physical embodiment of a goddess. In Medieval Europe, we tortured and punished them for being the familiars of witches.
In the twenty-first century, we are obsessed with filming and posting their antics on social media. And while we may think of them as our pets, that doesn’t mean that we are in charge.
Far from it. Cats know exactly how to get their humans to follow their orders! They have been an ongoing source of intrigue and mystery throughout human history. They are the stuff of myth and legend, as well as being our best friends. They sit among the stars and curl up on our laps.
There is nothing so wonderful as the magic of cats.
Verdict: Separated into two chapters, The Cat of the Night and The Cat of the Day, each chapter features three stand alone stories: the former being The Universal Cat, The Witch’s Cat and The Knowing Cat, the latter bringing forth The Idiomatic Cat, The Physical Cat and The Evolving Cat. [Although it also has an Appendix entitled The Cat of the Night and The Cat of the Day, a story for kittens of all ages].
For the author himself, Andrew Anderson, he has always had cats in his life growing up. Indeed, when he was born, his family had a cat called Nicky, who he used to chase around the house and try to catch!
When she died, not from being chased or even being caught by Andrew though, of course, the family adopted a kitten to replace it from his brothers cat (itself named Nicki) and Andrew named it Whiskey! [Although, the bond between he and cat at that time was not in full swing, as he had more time for the family dog, Tina!].
But when Tina died, Whiskey inherited Andrew and that was that for them both, so what we have here in The Magic of Cats is a must alluring, impassioned and unadulterated look into the lore behind them, which subsequently delves into their history, mythology and aforementioned folklore, to a measure that has not yet been quite so obtainable to the reader before now, me thinks.
A truly fascinating insight into the cats we all know and love, whether they be (as reputation proceeds them) worshiped as Gods or considered to be agents of the Devil, Andrew (who discovered Druidry in 2018) brings forth elegantly delivered poetic prose on the subject matter(s) to hand, whilst revealing how cats have been part of magickal practice for hundreds of years.
Complete with adorable illustrations by Hannah Willow, The Magic of Cats is a must-read for all those families and households that contain cats, if not for the chance to get to know your own furry friend a little better, but moreover to perhaps discover what type (Night or Day) of cat you actual have!
