Earth Spirit: Beyond Sustainability
By: Nimue Brown – Moon Books, $12.95

Description: Changing your life requires effort. Often, that effort brings its own benefits and you can end up improving your quality of life by making better choices.

Beyond Sustainability - Authentic Living at a Time of Climate Crisis is an extended discussion about individuality and choice and how, to thrive as individuals and a society, we must seek to move beyond the notion of sustainability.

Verdict: What do we really want from life? How do we find happiness, health, purpose and comfort? Humans are increasingly a miserable species, caught in ways of behaving that gives us very little will cost us the earth.

While we’re convinced that saving what remains of life on the planet would cost us too much, we won’t do it. We need to think seriously about what it means to be human, what it means to live, and how much we stand to lose.

With this book, Beyond Sustainability: Authentic Living at a Time of Climate Crisis from author Nimue Brown, she hopes to show us just how much we stand to gain from abandoning capitalism. Life could be good. We could have rich, peaceful, and joyful lives. All we would really have to give up is our misery and competitiveness.

So, what if it was easy to change our lives? What if happiness wasn’t an impossible dream to chase after? What if we could have nice things? The answer is simple. The answer begins with authenticity.

Thus, the book begins on the chapter What Makes an Authentic Life?, a question that has been central to Brown’s own path as a Druid for many years now, and thus it is primarily through Druidry that she has found her answers.

Written from an intrinsically Druidic perspective, but without assumption of who the reader is and what path they themselves might be taking, for authenticity is not the sole preserve of Druidry, and thus can be sought through any sincere exploration of life and self, other chapters include: Authenticity and the Unsustainable, Slow Life Sustainability, Wealth in Relationships, Creativity for All, and both Privilege, Poverty, Inclusion and Political Changes.

The message within? Try changing you life NOW. Cutting your very own carbon footprint. Don’t wait for someone to provide leadership, make whatever changes YOU can and NOW.

On a side note, yet one not wholly unattached, here are 12 ways to live more sustainably, for every day we make choices in our lives that affect the environment, the climate and other species. From what we eat to how many children we decide to have, there’s a lot we can do to “choose wild” and reduce our environmental footprint to leave more room for wild animals and plants.

1. Think twice before shopping
2. Make sure your big purchases have big environmental benefits
3. Go Plastic Free
4. Boycott products that endanger wildlife
5. Pay attention to labels
6. Be water wise
7. Drive less, drive green
8. Green your home
9. Choose Wild Energy
10. Take Extinction Off Your Plate
11. Choose to have a smaller family
12. Use your voice and your vote
