Next To Normal [DVD]
(Caissie Levy, Jamie Parker, Jack Wolfe, Eleanor Worthington-Coxn, et al / DVD / NR / 2026 / Liberator Films)

Overview: Next to Normal is an intimate exploration of family and illness, loss and grief, featuring a thrilling rock score from composer Tom Kitt and Book & Lyrics from Brian Yorkey.

At its heart is Diana, a suburban wife and mother living with bipolar disorder and haunted by her past. The original Broadway production won 3 Tony Awards® and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, one of only ten musicals to win the prestigious award.

DVD Verdict: The West End premiere at Wyndham’s Theatre followed a sold out run at the Donmar Warehouse. Starring Caissie Levy (Frozen), Jamie Parker (Harry Potter), Jack Wolfe, Eleanor Worthington-Cox, Trevor Dion-Nichols and Jack Ofrecio this production was nominated for four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical.

There are films that tell stories, and there are films that quietly dismantle the architecture through which we understand ourselves. Next to Normal belongs to the latter category. It isn’t interested in convincing you that mental illness is tragic or heroic. It simply asks you to inhabit a reality where certainty itself has become unstable.

Watching it feels strangely similar to reading Stanislaw Lem; not because of spaceships or distant planets, but because consciousness itself becomes the unknown territory. Lem once wrote: We do not want to conquer the cosmos; we simply want to extend the boundaries of Earth to the frontiers of the cosmos.

In Next to Normal, the cosmos is the mind. We don’t leave Earth. Earth leaves us. The film portrays bipolar disorder with remarkable restraint. Rather than reducing it to mood swings or dramatic episodes, it presents a consciousness that continually renegotiates what counts as reality. Psychiatry often describes bipolar disorder through neurotransmitters, genetic predispositions, and dysregulated neural circuits.

These explanations matter. Mood stabilizers, atypical antipsychotics, and psychotherapy; especially CBT, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, and family-focused therapy, have transformed countless lives. Medication is not a surrender of identity but often its recovery. Yet biology, while indispensable, rarely satisfies the existential questions the illness provokes.

This is where Bert Hellinger’s controversial but compelling perspective becomes an unexpected companion. Regardless of what one thinks about family constellations as a therapeutic method, Hellinger insisted that individuals often carry emotional burdens that did not originate with them. Whether understood literally or metaphorically, the notion invites an unsettling question: how much of our suffering belongs to us, and how much echoes from generations we never met?

In closing, Next to Normal never offers simplistic answers, but it lingers precisely in that space. The family is not merely a collection of people. It is an ecosystem of memory, silence, love, omission, and inherited grief. [W.D.]
