Marshmallow [Blu-ray]
(Kue Lawrence, Kai Cech, Giorgia Whigham, Corbin Bernsen, Pierson Fode, Paul Soter, et al / Blu-ray / R / (2025) 2026 / Toy Robot Video)
Overview: Camp Almar - Where Hearts, Bodies and Minds Come to Grow.
Sent off to a secluded summer camp, a shy and introverted 12-year-old boy, Morgan (Kue Lawrence, SKETCH), is thrust into a living nightmare when a campfire tale about a psychotic doctor becomes real.
As a mysterious figure begins stalking the camp, Morgan and his newfound friends, including a girl called Pilar (Kai Cech, DEAR SANTA), must embark on a perilous journey - one that will force them to confront their deepest fears and question the very nature of their existence.
Daniel DelPurgatorio’s smart and stylish feature debut, which also stars Corbin Bernsen (THE DENTIST), delivers an atmospheric modern-day twist on the summer camp slasher movie that will keep you guessing right through to its shocking final reveal.
Blu-ray Verdict: A cocktail of overprotection and trauma in an environment that became the sweet home of terror in the 70’s and 80’s Marshmallow is a simply fantastic example of how to take a well-trodden setting and create a new path. Through its shortcuts, Marshmallow manages to balance various themes in a heavy backpack without losing the sense of doubt between emotion and action on the right and wrong path.
Nicholas Elert’s music was a positive surprise, an element so fundamental to horror that tends to be overlooked. Marshmallow doesn’t fall into the trap and focuses on a science fiction feel in its texture-rich surroundings. His soundtrack is full of synthesizers, leads, pads, and bells that mix a bit of the classic weight of slasher films with the horror of the unknown and the fantastic, and dense bass lines concatenated with orchestral elements in its sound.
If you liked the music and sound work in IT FOLLOWS by Disasterpiece, Elert’s will also please you.
On a side note, Pilar (Kai Cech) and Dirk (Max Malas) shine in this film and (not giving anything away) but the antagonist’s look by Angela Trivino, with his futuristic butcher-meets-fencing fighter aspect, is also highly memorable, as is their weapon!
As for the incredible twist that everyone is talking about, well, yes it is an interesting one. I knew there was gonna be some kind of twist, I could just feel it, but the scope of the twist was profound and incredible. I’m shocked how much I enjoyed Marshmallow. The twist will either be loved or hated. No in between. It makes it stand out and does something different if you ask me. Give it a shot if you like science fiction in your horror.
