Overview: Ninja Wars (original title: Iga Ninpōchō) is a dark, supernatural action film set in feudal Japan, blending ninja lore with horror and fantasy elements.
The story follows Jotaro, a wandering ninja who becomes entangled in a deadly conflict between rival clans after a brutal massacre wipes out his comrades. As he investigates, he discovers that the violence is tied to a sinister conspiracy involving a demonic sect seeking power through forbidden rituals. This group employs grotesque, otherworldly abilities--blurring the line between human and monster--to eliminate their enemies and dominate the region.
Jotaro joins forces with a mysterious female survivor whose own past is steeped in tragedy and vengeance. Together, they confront increasingly bizarre and terrifying foes, each wielding unnatural powers. As the battles escalate, Jotaro must rely not only on his physical skill but also on inner resolve to resist corruption and defeat the dark forces threatening to consume the land.
The film is known for its stylized violence, eerie atmosphere, and imaginative (often shocking) supernatural elements, making it a standout entry in early 1980’s Japanese genre cinema.
Blu-ray Verdict: Despite the presence of real, fictionalized historical characters such as Shimura Shinzaemon and Hattori Hanzō, Saitō’s adaptation of a classic fantasy novel keeps its footing firmly in the fantastical, with an evil adviser lusting after his master’s wife enlisting an evil wizard to steal her away. Cue a band of seemingly invincible demon warriors kidnapping the unknown twin sister of the desired woman to create a love potion, only to be pursued by her heroic lover (Hiroyuki Sanada).
Things go awry when the kidnapped girls head is switched onto another body, and what follows is a glorious game of duplicated heads (twin sisters), bodies (both head and heart can remember past love despite their new appendages) and loyalties. The fantastical elements never overpower the central character work, while a superb mid-film set piece, in which a band of warrior monks are deceived into raiding a temple, grounds the film with a glorious action beat reminiscent of the earthy spectacle of Throne of Blood.
Yet the film sometimes stumbles narratively, with plot beats suddenly appearing from thin air simply to drive its multiple cases of mistaken identity. The second half slows after the triumphant temple raid, while the ultimate climax feels clipped, hamstrung by the very obvious reveal of a mysterious protagonist’s true identity and a lazy about-face because true love simply finds a way.
Still, Ninja Wars has a frenetic pace, some great wirework and a cast that includes Sonny Chiba and Jun Miho, who is required to play at least three different characters who then proceed to play different versions of themselves, and doing so beautifully. A rip-roaring tale of fantastical love and blood whose overly intricate plotting somehow manages to get out of the way of the fizzing energy of the film itself. [M.C.]
