DVD Verdict: Funnily enough, and just before this DVD arrived for review, I just watched Twiggy in the 1971 British film The Boy Friend, alongside Christopher Gable, Tommy Tune, and Max Adrian, and she was absolutely fantastic. She was so good that she should have been Oscar nominated, in my humble opinion.
I mean, sure, she was also amazing on Broadway, with her role in the Tommy Tune choreographed dance musical My One and Only, in 1984, but being the so-called precursor of extremely thin models to make it big back then, who knew what acting chops she would bring to the table.
And now I have obviously watched this brand new Twiggy documentary The Woman Behind the Icon and it clearly showcases a woman who was completely unaffected by fame in any way, shape or form. Completely down to earth, yes, extremely naive, but someone who most assuredly became a legend in our lifetimes.
And so what you get is this documentary that introduces us to the - at that time - 16 year-old thin wonder of the new world of entertainment, Twiggy, Directed Sadie Frost, it focuses on the life of the greatest It Girl of all time: Dame Twiggy Lawson.
Indeed, this is the very first time Twiggy has ever told her story first-hand. Discovered at 16 and proclaimed as the face of 1966 by Daily Express journalist Deirdre McSharry, the model became an overnight sensation. The world saw her grace the covers of Vogue and Tatler by 17, and the New Yorker magazine devoted nearly 100 pages to the Twiggy phenomenon after her arrival in New York.
Twiggy shook the world by giving women a whole new look and feel to aspire to. She also brought an elfin androgyny to the forefront and helped revolutionize the accepted image of the female form, giving a voice to a whole new generation of women.
