Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast [DVD]
(Michael O’Hear, Bob Bozek, Sam Qualiana, Jackey Hall, et al / DVD / NR / (2011) 2026 / Wild Eye Releasing)
Overview: Twelve years after a doomed scientific expedition uncovers something prehistoric beneath the frozen earth, a quiet snowbound town finds itself under siege by a creature long thought to be nothing more than a myth.
Following a series of brutal attacks, the terrifying truth emerges: a ancient predator has awakened, hunting from beneath the snow.
A small group of locals, scientists, and hunters band together to confront the impossible, hunting a shark creature that strikes without warning, dragging its victims into the icy depths.
DVD Verdict: Working with a microbudget but unlimited DIY heart, writer-director Sam Qualiana crafts a monster movie that embraces its practical effects, hometown charm, and the enduring appeal of creature features.
Emerging at the front end of the modern sharksploitation wave, SNOW SHARK: ANCIENT SNOW BEAST stands as one of the earliest low-budget entries to reimagine the shark film outside its natural Hollywood habitat, pushing the sub-genre into absurd, snowbound territory with clever and unapologetic ambition.
Needless to say that I was not harboring a single expectation to this movie. I mean, a movie that is written by, directed by and starring the one and the same person is usually a questionable affair. And with a title such as Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast, there were no doubt that this would be a questionable movie. But still, I am a reviewer and so it is my task to watch such films - and I have to honestly say that I kinda dug it!
Needless to say that I was not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list, and that was actually something that spoke in favor of the movie. The acting performances weren’t actually all that shabby for a low budget movie such as this.
The editing in the movie was insanely shot, but then again why wouldn’t it be? Mark Polonia was involved in the editing, and he is the guy behind a heap of really, really questionable shark movies!
The effects in the movie were not always hits, but at least they weren’t as bad as what you usually get in the movies written and directed by Mark Polonia (sorry, but true). The sounds that the shark was making was laughable, sure, but the fact that at times is was enjoyably laughable made this a great watch overall.
15 years since its initial release, SNOW SHARK remains a stellar example of scrappy, grassroots regional filmmaking.
