MAWS [Blu-ray]
(Amanda Foster, Jim Bunny Bundshuh, William Childress, et al / Blu-ray / NR / 2026 / SRS Cinema)
Overview: Something in the water is picking off tourists at a Ghana beachside resort. Is it a great white shark? No, it’s MAWS - a relentless psycho killer!
Local authorities shut down the resort and offer a $3,000 reward to stop the bloodthirsty creature ... but they’re gonna need a bigger beach to hold all this carnage!
Blu-ray Verdict: As the storyline goes, it’s not actually all that farfetched (if you allow your brain to go with the flow, so to speak).
A group of criminals known as The Hanover Gang rob and murder a rival gang. They hit the road and end up in a small seaside town called Luna Pier where they fall prey to a horrifying half-man, half-shark Nazi experiment!
Directed by Michigan-born Matt Jaissle, since the 1990s, he has actually had sixteen feature credits, but in the last year or so he’s really upped his output with six films already done and dusted ... and another four presently in production!
I have already reviewed a few of his past cinematic endeavors - such as Gobblefoot, 300 Killers and his more recent output Amityville VR - and so knew exactly what I was in for with regard this Jaws-esque output.
A fun ride from start to finish, Maws is obviously a very low-budget affair, though they do their best with what they’ve got. Sure, ok, you just have to turn off all logic and sense to fully enjoy it, especially as it comes complete with some rather wonky special effects and the actual Maws is, well, probably not all that frightening in broad daylight, but all that aside and this film is well worth your time, trust me.
