4K Blu-ray Verdict: Growing up in the backwoods of Kentucky, Larry Flint would make moonshine as a kid. As an adult, Larry Flynt (Woody Harrelson) runs a strip club in Cincinnati. Althea Leasure Flynt (Courtney Love) is the new strippers. Then he publishes Hustler magazine as a regular guy’s Playboy. It gets notoriety with the publication of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis pics. The brash offensive pornographer comes to the attention of righteous Charles Keating (James Cromwell) and gets charged. Alan Isaacman (Edward Norton) is his lawyer in the long running battle with the government.

This movie does a lot right. It gets you rooting for characters that are junkies or egomaniacs and a lot of that is the performance of Woody and Courtney Love. Get you someone that looks at you the way Althea looks at Larry every time he makes a joke in a court of law.

Indeed, one of the stand out parts of this wondrously colorful story is when in 1975, Flynt loses a court case for smut-peddling in Cincinnati, and spends a few months in jail, but the decision is overturned on appeal, and he is released soon afterwards. Ruth Carter Stapleton (Donna Hanover), a Christian activist and sister of President Jimmy Carter, meets Flynt and urges him to give his life to Jesus.

Flynt is moved and lets his newfound religion influence everything in his life, including the content of Hustler. In 1978, during another trial in Georgia, Flynt and Isaacman are both shot by a man with a rifle (Joseph Paul Franklin, who confessed years later) while they walk outside the courthouse. Isaacman recovers, but Flynt is paralysed from the waist down and uses a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

Flynt wishes he was dead and renounces God. Because of the emotional and physical pain, he moves to Beverly Hills and spirals down into depression and drug use. During this time, Althea also becomes addicted to painkillers and morphine. In 1983, Flynt feels rejuvenated after undergoing surgery to deaden several nerves in his back damaged by the bullet wounds. He returns to an active role with the publication, which, in his absence, had been run by Althea and Jimmy.

Flynt soon appears in court again for leaking videos relating to the John DeLorean entrapment case, and during his courtroom antics, he fires Isaacman, then throws an orange at the judge. He later wears an American flag as an adult diaper along with an Army helmet, and wears T-shirts with provocative messages!

It’s a great performance from Woody Harrelson in one of the most compelling modern characters. Love him or hate him, one cannot ignore Larry Flynt. Also, one should not ignore this performance. Surprisingly Courtney Love gives a coherent and wonderful performance. It’s a quick moving movie despite a lot of courtroom drama. Furthermore, it takes a dirty subject and shines a light on a brighter meaning.
