DVD Verdict: Portraits Of The Apocalypse is an Argentinian apocalyptic anthology that plays out over four connected stories. Each one gives us a different look at the beginning of the end of days. Different struggles, the same desperation, all set within the same approaching zombie apocalypse.

The first chapter drops us into a crime scene gone bad just as the outbreak begins. A cop, a body, an unlawful mistake and the weight of decisions that cannot be undone. It is more about panic and paranoia than monsters.

The second story takes place in a family home. A father trying to get himself together for his next shift is finding it increasingly hard, which might have something to do with a bite he got from one of his friends on a night out. This one plays with denial. The real horror is not outside; it is already inside the doors, and it is already too late; they just don’t know it.

The third story is stripped to the bone and shifts to a camcorder POV, giving us a found footage gem. A pregnant woman is battling with her husband’s worrying behavior. This segment is raw and intimate and deals with a mother’s strength and love for her unborn child, while it also deals with the more morbid idea of bringing a child into a world that has already gone to sh*t.

The final story leans into biblical territory. People talking to the dead thinking there is an ungodly (or just an unhappy God) force at play. There is a haunting sense of desperation as a father tries to reason with a captured zombie, hoping it can bring his dead son back.

The strength of Portraits of the Apocalypse is in its portrayal of human behavior. It is not loud, nor filled with gore. It is a film about people slowly cracking when faced with the inevitable apocalypse, and how the choices we make will lead them to their demise before the zombies get them. [G.G.]
