Brute Corps [4K Ultra HD]
(Joseph Kaufmann, Paul Carr, Alex Rocco, Felton Perry, Roy Jensen, Jennifer Billingsley, et al / Blu-ray / NR / (1971) 2026 / Dark Force Entertainment)
Overview: A group of hardened mercenaries is assembled to transport a kidnapped woman across a harsh desert landscape, each man motivated by money, power, or personal gain. As the journey unfolds, underlying tensions and competing agendas begin to surface, turning the mission into a volatile clash of egos and desires.
The captive woman becomes both a bargaining chip and a catalyst for conflict, as alliances shift and the group descends into violence. What begins as a straightforward job devolves into a brutal struggle for control and survival, where trust is nonexistent and betrayal is inevitable.
Blu-ray Verdict: Jerry Jameson and Michael Pataki partnered on a number of projects such as The Dirt Gang (1972), The Bat People (1974), Airport ’77 (1977), with this rugged biker-inspired action thriller being their first collaboration in which Pataki belongs to a group of sadistic mercenaries led by Charles Macauley’s character who take pretty, free-spirited hitchhiker Jennifer Billingsley and draft dodger Joseph Kaufman hostage; subjecting the woman to degrading sexual assault whilst Kaufman escapes looking for help.
Talented B-movie cast co-stars Paul Carr as the sympathetic member disapproving of the ill-discipline, Felton Perry, Roy Jensen and Alex Rocco also amongst the group, with Rocco playing a sex psycho and Jensen a cold-blooded, shotgun wielding killer.
Bearing similarities to The Rebel Rousers (1970), there’s a scene early on where they make short work of a bunch of rowdy bikers which in a way both acknowledges kinship with the biker film genre and simultaneously differentiates them as the apex breed.
Also, the cinematography is grainy and the desert setting works perfectly well. It’s great to see such obscure 70’s exploitation classic before highly acclaimed The Expendables with Sly Stallone and Dolph Lundgren.
Whether they live up to that mantle is perhaps debatable, though more certain is that Brute Corps is a satisfyingly rough and downbeat tale which exploitation film fans should readily appreciate. [C.W.]
