Artificial Flowers [Blu-ray]
(Andrew Villarreal, Emily Charouhas, et al / Blu-ray / NR / (2023) 2026 / Anchor Bay Entertainment)
Overview: Over the course of one tense evening in a Los Angeles high-rise, two troubled writers unravel each other’s secrets.
Blu-ray Verdict: Set entirely during a single evening in a sleek Los Angeles high-rise, two accomplished writers--Maeve (Emily Charouhas, Desperate Housewives) and Phelix (Andrew Villarreal, Kaplan’s Korner)--find themselves entwined in a verbal and emotional tug-of-war.
As wine flows and the city lights glow around them, their conversation quickly spirals beyond casual chatter. What begins as creative brainstorming becomes a raw excavation of their darkest secrets, past traumas, and fractured psyches.
Through pointed questions, sly barbs, and hypnotic tension, Maeve and Phelix each adopt the other as a sounding board and mirror--pushing boundaries as they provoke confessions and revelations.
In this intimate, psychologically charged dialogue, the performers fuel a gripping exploration of power dynamics, manipulation, and catharsis. Over the span of 85 minutes, artificial façades crumble, exposing how fragile, terrifyingly human bonds can become weaponized in the quest for truth--and perhaps redemption.
Yet another movie that I was not familiar with, or even knew what to expect (as I tend not to deep dive too much into such movies, instead allowing them to wave over me), it turned out that Artificial Flowers was so good that I have now watched it twice in three days, so too my partner, and I have logged it as one of the top 20 movies of this year!
