Fungicide (Special Edition)
(Dave Bonavita, David Weldon, Mary Wascavage, Wes Miller, et al / Blu-ray / NR / (2002) 2026 / Visual Vengeance)
Overview: Deep within a tranquil forest, five strangers meet at a secluded bed and breakfast. But one of these guests happens to be a mad scientist, who uses his vacation to accidentally create an army of killer mushrooms.
Now unleashed on the other guests, and with the body count quickly piling up, it’s up to the survivors to arm themselves and fight back against these slaughtering shrooms in hopes of stopping them from world domination!
From Dave Wascavage, the writer/ director of Rifftrax and Red Letter Media favorite Suburban Sasquatch comes a film that somehow manages to outdo and out-WTF that movie in almost every department, with jaw-dropping mushroom samurai fighting, puppet karate decapitations and near interdimensional level CGI alchemy that will have viewers believing they have actually ingested mushrooms, the good kind.
Blu-ray Verdict: Fungicide is an ultra-low-budget film (aka: home movie) about Silas, a mad scientist who lives with his parents. When Silas goes to stay at an inn (aka: someone’s house), he spills a test tube full of his secret formula on the ground.
Chaos and death ensue when the serum is absorbed by some mushrooms. Silas and the other guests are besieged by the ferocious fungi. One by one the humans are mercilessly slaughtered by the terrible toadstools!
If you can withstand subzero production values, delightfully heinous acting, and OTT and ridiculous monsters, then this might be survivable for you. It’s semi-humorous and the characters, while imbecilic, are somewhat endearing, which is why, for the most part, this movie worked for me personally.
However, you might want to partake heavily before viewing for some of the mushroom monster vs. Human fights are truly hysterical! It’s when the CGI shrooms show up that things really take a nosedive, but by then you are more or less heavily invested anyway. [D.C.]
