Colony Mutation [Collector’s Edition]
(Anna Zizzo, David Rommel, Joan Dinco, Susan L. Cane, et al / Blu-ray / NR / (1995) 2026 / Visual Vengeance)
Overview: When genetic scientist Meredith Weaver finds out about her husband’s affair, she doses him with an experimental and very unstable serum, which causes his body parts to separate from his torso and take on monstrous lives of their own, all of them now craving human flesh. Soon, he’s stalking the streets in search of young women to quench the now insatiable hunger of his evil appendages.
Tom Berna’s rarely seen, stop-motion heavy Super 8mm body horror plays out like an alternate universe Lifetime movie directed by David Cronenberg that delivers both the gruesome FX set pieces but also serves a cautionary tale of male sexual addiction and unchecked passion.
Blu-ray Verdict: A female scientist and her husband are both employed at the same genetic research lab. When the hubby is caught two-timing with another girl on staff, angered wife douses him with a bottle of experimental tissue-regrowth serum.
What results is one of the more interesting monster ideas to come along in quite a while for this guy transmogrifies into, literally, a modular being! His arms, legs, head, torso, and yes, his penis, all become mobile parasitic predators, detaching then reassembling after feeding ... and they’re ALWAYS hungry!
A pretty damn cool premise, for sure, but it is just a shame that the great, late David Cronenberg wasn’t involved as it would have been a cult classic by now, in my humble opinion. Here though it still works as an innovative biopunk horror concept, which again, seems like it would have been right up his proverbial alley.
And so what we have here was a mid-90’s direct-to-video drop that comes complete with, I am sorry to say; although it didn’t distract me entirely through the movie, some underused lighting techniques and some pretty subpar special effects, in truth, sorry. But, and again, it wasn’t enough to sway me away from finishing it as it still features some great, all be they dutifully uniform performances; although the male lead draws out a very creditable antagonist character.
