'Nature: The Last Rhino'
(DVD / PG / 2018 / PBS)

Overview: Sudan is the very last male Northern White Rhino ... or, when this documentary was being filmed, he was. For now he has sadly passed just last week, which makes this amazing story of this brave animal, is told through the global cast of people involved in Sudan's life of 43 years, even more remarkable (and yet poignantly ever so sad, of course).

DVD Verdict: Telling it like it is, the tragic death of Sudan the rhino should act as a warning of the need to act to prevent mass extinctions around the world, say conservationists.

Conservationists have warned that the death of the last male northern white rhinoceros in Kenya is a sign that unsustainable human activity is driving a new era of mass extinctions around the globe.

Sudan, the “gentle giant” who lived in the Ol Pejeta conservancy in Kenya, was put down last Monday after the pain from a degenerative illness became too great.

It leaves only two females - his daughter and granddaughter - through which conservationists hope they might save the species from dying out altogether using IVF.

That said, 'Nature: The Last Rhino' is a glorious retelling of a life not for the fainted hearted, that of Sudan. He was aged 2 when snatched from his mom's side in Central Africa and became a prized exhibit in a zoo behind the Iron Curtain while the rest of his kind was poached to extinction.

His harrowing journey is told through the international cast of characters who have been involved in Sudan's life, from when he was snatched as a calf from his mother's side in war-torn Central Africa, to his captivity as a prized exhibit in a cold, concrete zoo behind the Iron Curtain while poaching devastated his kind to extinction back home.

As he was back when this documentary was filmed, Sudan was 43 years-old and half-blind, living out his days under 24-hour armed guard, on a protective sanctuary in Kenya.

As his kind nears its last hour, scientists and animal experts turn to technology in a race to save the Northern White Rhino before it dies out forever. But now with Sudan gone, and only two females - his daughter and granddaughter - left from the entire species, well, this is yet another human-caused tragedy for our generation to have to understand and accept. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
