(DVD / PG-13 / 2018 / PBS)
Overview: 'Putin's Revenge' is a riveting investigation of how the U.S. struggled to confront Vladimir Putin over Russian involvement in the 2016 election, how revenge may have motivated Putin to target American democracy, and the U.S. responses under Presidents Obama and Trump.
DVD Verdict: For those not in the complete know, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin
is a Russian politician serving as President of the Russian Federation since 7 May 2012, previously holding the position from 2000 until 2008.
He was Prime Minister of the Russian Federation from 1999 until 2000, and again from 2008 until 2012. During his second term as Prime Minister, he was the chairman of the ruling United Russia party.
Vladimir Putin was born in Leningrad in the Soviet Union. He studied law at the Saint Petersburg State University, graduating in 1975. Putin was a KGB foreign intelligence officer for 16 years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 1991 to enter politics in Saint Petersburg.
He moved to Moscow in 1996 and joined President Boris Yeltsin's administration, rising quickly through the ranks and becoming Acting President on 31 December 1999, when Yeltsin resigned.
Putin won the subsequent 2000 presidential election by a 53% to 30% margin, thus avoiding a runoff with his Communist Party of the Russian Federation opponent, Gennady Zyuganov. He was reelected President in 2004 with 72% of the vote.
With in-depth reporting from Moscow and Washington, DC, FRONTLINE tells the story of how Vladimir Putin came to see the United States as an enemy - and why he decided to target an American election.
Against the backdrop of investigations by the FBI and Congress into the role Russia played in the 2016 U.S. election, this epic documentary draws on more than 60 interviews with diplomats, intelligence officials, political leaders, journalists, and primary sources to trace how Putin went from low-ranking KGB agent to long-serving president of a newly assertive Russia with the ability to wage cyber-war in the U.S. and across the globe.
Personally, throughout the last year during and following the campaign I often wondered why Putin wanted Trump in the White House. After watching this, the picture becomes more clear on Putin’s motives for tipping the 2016 election.
An analogy came to mind: Putin is like cat playing with a dead mouse (Trump). In essence, what it comes down to is that Trump leans toward dictatorship, but he isn’t smart enough to know or care to keep up with Putin and his sneaky ways.
Anyway, I think that whatever political party your affiliated with, we should all be concerned about how (if at all, of course, our election was tampered with - and if these two had more than just a finger inside the workings of it!
