For those unaware, the first studio album recorded by The Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1979, and which introduced the outside world to the contemporary blues of this peerless band, was forged in the clubs of Austin, Texas with Jimmie Vaughan on guitar, Kim Wilson on vocals and harmonica, Keith Ferguson on bass and Mike Buck on drums.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds were formed in 1974, but these days singer Kim Wilson is the only constant member through the band’s entire history. Their 1986 album Tuff Enuff sold over a million copies and spawned two minor hit singles: the title track and Wrap It Up.

This remastered CD contains some three bonus tracks not included on the original 1979 album or the latest 12” blue vinyl release.

Anyone who has got into Jimmie Vaughan late via his excellent recent solo albums and who wants to investigate his earlier work should definitely check out his 1994 album “Strange Pleasure” and also this superb album with The Fabulous Thunderbirds from 1979.

In truth his guitar playing style hasn’t changed that much over the years and this album contains plenty of his trademark tasteful yet economic guitar licks.

Half of the songs are originals written by Kim Wilson (who sings and plays a mean harp) and the quality is high throughout. One of my favorite records of all time with one my favorite guitar players, Jimmie Vaughan (quite different style than his brother Stevie Ray). Great songs, great harp by Kim Wilson, makes this a very enjoyable album from A to Z.

It has also aged better than most other Thunderbirds albums.
