We begin with the beach drums and scintillating dancefloor moves of 'Sweet Fuh Days' from Trinidadian soca singer Patrice Roberts. Sure, to me, it sounds like its got a few too many BPM going on there, but that incredible energy merges sweetly into 'Go Ask Yuh Mudda' from musician, producer, and songwriter supreme, Bunji Garlin. That then leans seamlessly into 'Touch It' from a staple of the Soca music scene, Fay-Ann Lyons, before we get 'Savannah' from Soca veteran Neil 'Iwer' George.
Tony Prescott's 'Oil Drum' keeps the party going, albeit with a different, more poppy, toned down beat, and that's backed by the seductive 'Big Bad Soca (Remix)' from Bunji Garlin. Featuring Shenseea, the newest artiste to the Dancehall/Reggae community, it's one of the best trackson this 2CD, of that have no doubt.
Then comes 'Give It To Ya' (feat. Patrice Roberts) by Marzville, which is backed by both 'Pull Up' from British-born, Bajan soca Queen Alison Hinds and then Lyrikal's infectious 'Rude Waze.' Fusing words together and adding a melody like it's second nature, this is yet another stand out cut on this new 2018 collection.
The Eastern backdrop of 'Dip' from Hypasounds is wonderful to hear, and is followed by the techno-influenced 'No Weapon' from LFS Music and then 'Sully' (from Ricky T) follows suit. With a commanding voice and witty lyrics, much like Tizzy's '10,' this new set of Soca Gold embraces both old and new within its community perfectly.
The fluid pop-bounce of 'She Bad (Remix)' from Turner, Machel Mantano & Flavour is pure Soca gold (all pun intended) and is as real hipsway of a catchy dancefloor track. Then comes the toe-tappin' 'Barahee' from both Rikki Jai & Ravi B, another track that borrows from the Eastern influences, and then we get 'Pick Me Up' from Sanctuary.
The album, first disc, at least, wraps up with the Soca, reggae fusion, R&B, and soul feel of 'Feeling Good' (Claudette Peters), and then we finally get to hear from Gorg on 'Sweet Spot.' The second disc then brings us both 'Soca Gold Booyaka Smash Mix' from DJ Titan VD and 'Soca Gold 2018 Mega-Mix' from DJ Sound-4-Life.
