Title - 'Germanico In Germania'
Artist - Nicola Porpora

For those not in the know, 'Germanico in Germania' is an opera in three acts composed by Nicola Porpora to an Italian-language libretto by Nicola Coluzzi.

It premiered in February 1732 at the Teatro Capranica in Rome with an all-male cast. The leading male roles were taken by two of the most prominent castrato singers of the 18th century—Domenico Annibali as Germanico and Caffarelli as his nemesis Arminio.

The female roles were portrayed by castrati en travesti. The opera's story is a fictionalised account of the Roman general Germanicus and is set in Germania Inferior during 14 AD. Germanico in Germania was very popular in its day but fell into obscurity until it was revived in 2015 at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music.

In this world premiere recording, Germanico In Germania, just released via Decca Classics as a 3CD set, Max Emanuel Cencic unearths Porpora’s opera.

Supported by a world-class cast, including star soprano Julia Lezhneva, and Capella Cracoviensis under the baton of Jan Tomasz Adamus, the entire performance was performed on period instruments.

Led here by the aforementioned countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic, his combination of beautiful, pure tone and passionate delivery has made him one of today’s most sought after singers.

Born in 1976 in Zagreb, Cencic’s extensive CD catalogue has won many awards, including eleven prizes for his Faramondo, four for a recital of Handel arias, and Germany’s prestigious Echo Klassik prize for his Duetti album.

He also sang the role of Valentiniano in the recording of Gluck’s opera Ezio, which also won an Echo Klassik prize, as did Leonardo Vinci’s Artaserse (all Virgin Classics).

But it's what they have chosen to do here with the opera as a whole that has astounded everyone concerned with the recording. Originally created for performance by a virtuosic all-male cast of castrati in Rome, the two male characters that support Max are now performed by female singers (Nesi, astringently androgynous, and Bennani prettily boyish).

Sure, and spread over three CDs, the music is challenging and some arias definitely shine brighter than others, but what his rival Handel was BEWST known for in London in the 1730s most assuredly still transcends here today.

All in all, Germanico In Germania is superbly sung and conducted by Jan Tomasz Adamus. Indeed, Baroque opera lovers need not hesitate for this is going to take immediate pride of place in your classical music library, of that have no doubt.

Notes, plot summary, and pictures of four of the six performers in the recording sessions can be found in the beautiful color booklet that accompanies this 3CD set, with the libretto and English translation in a separate booklet.
