Title - 'Ghostbusters' (Original Motion Picture Score)
Artist - Theodore Shaporo

As we are all more than well aware by now, 'Ghostbusters' makes its long-awaited return, rebooted with a cast of hilarious new characters - and four very accomplished female actors in place of those world renowned four men that first brought Slimer and the Stay Puff giant to our movie theaters.

Thirty years after the beloved original franchise took the world by storm, director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and, hamming it up as best he can, Chris Hemsworth.

But fear not devote lovers of the original, returning from the original cast to join in the fun are Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Annie Potts and Ernie Hudson. 'Ghostbusters' opened in theaters nationwide on July 15th, 2016 and boy, did it make a box office splash! Accompanied by a terrific, and pulsatingly fun score from Theodore Shapiro, Ghostbusters's 21 tracks are just perfect for the mayhem that ensues on the big screen.

Shapiro was born in Washington, D.C. and once knowing where his destiny lay, quickly earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Brown University in 1993, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in music composition from the Juilliard School in 1995.

From the upbeat, jazzy sounds of The Devil Wears Prada to the jungle-adventure send-up Tropic Thunder to the sentiment of Marley & Me, Shapiro has consistently delivered memorable music for some of the funniest movies of the last ten years.

is careful touch has made him a sought-after collaborator for Hollywood's leading comedy directors. Indeed, Shapiro has also composed the scores for such comedy classics as Old School, Dodgeball, Fun with Dick and Jane, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, State and Main and Starsky and Hutch.

Personally, and whilst this IS a great soundtrack, for me it breaks up into a tale of two halves. The first half of the score successfully provides an appropriate musically reactive effect to the onscreen action, but it doesn't push beyond that. Many of the opening cues start to develop a similar pattern that probably works for the film, but doesn't offer much as a stand alone listening experience.

To Shapiro's credit, his use of the chorus throughout many of the cues provides some wonderful moments and is outstanding. For me, the score really begins to hit it's stride with humorously tilted "The Power of Patty Compels You" (track 14). It's about halfway through this track when the chorus and action music kicks everything into another level. The score begins to breath new life and becomes much more fascinating and interesting to listen to by this point.

The second half of the CD contains some great instrumentation, outstanding choral vocals, and a variety of movements. So yeah, for me, the second half of the score is where the good stuff is. Another big moment is "Battle of Times Square" (track 17). Shapiro's own motif is played boldly and it eventually brings us to a rousing celebratory variation of the original theme.
