Conjuring Dirt
By: Taren S - Moon Books, $17.95

Description: Right under your feet lies one of the best magickal tools a practitioner could use in their workings - dirt. Whether it comes from graveyards, footprints, crossroads, or elsewhere, the dirt from different places is a powerful aid in the magick to your workings.

Verdict: When we work with dirt, we’re working with one of the most fundamental elements of being human. From dust we appeared and to dust we shall return, the saying goes. Dirt creates a magickal, energetic link that heightens any endeavor. This element of earth brings a deep spiritual dynamic and connection to any working.

Since it might be difficult to decide where to start - because dirt covers the planet, even under the oceans - author Taren S narrows the focus to specific magickal-spiritual locations, locations of merit and power, for you to collect your own dirt.

Implementing dirt into magickal workings requires more skill than its availability would denote. Dirt workings involve the realms of light and dark magick, healing, curses, and death. This book will guide, help, and warn all those who wish to use dirt for magickal workings.

Conjuring Dirt: Magick of Footprints, Crossroads & Graveyards is a simply fascinating collective learning prose of folk magic and how it relates to, and at times is wholly bonded to the dirt around us; in the most sorcerer-culled of ways, of course.

These old and still very much as powerful as they ever were forms of magick come together to bring forth a book quite like no other that I have read before, in all truth. With dirt having been taken from church grounds, various burial sites and even court houses, to name but a few, we journey between a South Carolina politician to the Father of the Garden District in New Orleans, and not only shows us how such dirt has been used down the years, but wises us up to how it is, at its core, the giver of nutrients for the bodies of life, the final resting places of our ancestors and the accumulative dust of the ancients (amongst others).

To simply state that Taren S gives us the dirt on the subject matter to hand, would be jokingly dismissive of what she has attempted to illuminate our world with, albeit a genuinely spot of statement, but, and all that said, this personal journey goes deep, is as intriguing and as truly fascinating as you could ever hope for and I will bet that it opens up a lot of new eyes also.

In closing, and in a lovely reveal, and as Taren herself explains, as I journeyed to many mystical places seeking my own sense of self, I gave birth to another magickal being. From the beginning I shielded and at times hid her and our family ties so that she could embrace her own journey and stand separate from me in the magickal community at large.

In the shadows she has stood behind me her entire life. She grew up in the magickal community, quietly making her way, having her own spiritual journey and magickal experiences. In time she came to share space with me and together we founded the House of Witchcraft. So much of my world is now hers and this book is a product of that. She is my daughter, and her name is Ashiana S.

About the Author Taren S stood in her first magickal circle in the backwoods of North Carolina when she was seventeen years old. She was initiated High Priestess within American Witchcraft in 1995. For over a decade she worked at a Haitian Voodoo Doctor’s botanica as a spiritual counselor and professional tarot card reader in the South Carolina Lowcountry region. Furthering her magickal and spiritual path she was initiated as a Mama Bridget within American Voodoo/Hoodoo. She currently lives in San Diego, California.
