Ritual of Writing: Writing as a Spiritual Practice
by: Andrew Anderson / Moon Books / $14.95

Overview: Using writing to deepen your connection with the Universe. The Ritual of Writing explores the connection between writing and ritual in Pagan spirituality. Focusing upon practical tasks, it begins by helping readers create a piece of writing connected to the Wheel of the Year and honoring a seasonal festival, taking them step by step through the process.

Verdict: There is a key element of working with the spirit of place, wherever the reader is in the world. The book also considers other ways in which writing can inform spiritual practice, discussing elements such as poetry, non-fiction and ritual work. Practical throughout, with developmental tasks at each stage, The Ritual of Writing helps the reader build skill and confidence and to find their own writing voice.

In a book that is as fascinating, as eye-opening and as impassioned as one could only hope it to be with this title, The Ritual of Writing: Writing as a Spiritual Practice by author Andrew Anderson is one that will immediately open your eyes to seeing a connection between your spirituality, your writing, and the incredibly vibrant power of nature that surrounds you, wherever you might be; and which is, in and unto itself, an infinite source of inspiration.

In what is a quite brilliant theory to connect writing with the magic of location, any and all seasonal celebrations, and the practice of holding to your own governing ritual, I was myself hooked from the very start (well, I am a journalist, after all, the written word my one and only true love).

What Andrew does is focus on activities centered around different forms of writing (fiction, non-fiction, poetry), basically, all those outlets that should appeal to both the serious practitioner of Pagan spirituality, but also anyone looking for new ways to reflect upon and spark their very own creativity.

Ergo, each highly relatable chapter gives a different perspective to the process of writing and how you can bring your own character to your prose. The book even sets out tasks along the way that help you to be imaginative and creative, and be more able to connect with your surroundings; whether that me a place, a person or a time, etc.

And leaving the last word to the author himself, he says: This book will guide you through the process that I developed when I began writing stories to honor the eight Celtic Wheel of the Year festivals and encourage you to do the same.

This is a process which requires you to focus on where you are in the world, read the work of others, and try out different techniques in your writing. It will also lead you to explore old stories and myths which you can either retell or use within your work.

Finally, the book will explore ideas for further types of spiritual writing and how we can set up a space to embed spirituality in our work.

About the Author: After trying a number of spiritualties, Andrew discovered Druidry in 2013. He is currently studying the Ovate grade with the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids. Andrew is a freelance English and Creative Writing teacher, and is training to be a celebrant. His passion lies in working with the spirit of place, and he spends a lot of time in the nearby Cotswolds. Andrew lives in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK.
