P.O. Box Tinto Brass (2Disc Edition) [4K Ultra HD]
(Tinto Brass, Cinzia Roccaforte, et al / 4K UHD + Blu-ray / NR / (1995) 2026 / Cult Epics)
Overview: Italian director Tinto Brass is known as the absolute master of erotica, creator of works like All Ladies Do It, Frivolous Lola and Paprika. His gift at perfectly portraying the beauty of the female body has made him celebrated by both men and women.
And it is precisely the latter category that sends him boxes full of fan letters. P.O. Box Tinto Brass is a collection of those letters, photos and videos of female sexual fantasies.
This erotic comedy featuring the Maestro himself, with a score by Riz Ortolani, contains a succession of exciting, downright sensational and sometimes even shocking material.
Cult Epics presents the Uncut version in a new 4K transfer with both the original Italian language track and the English dub.
4K Blu-ray Verdict: A delightfully self-indulgent, episodic erotic comedy which allows director Tinto Brass to not only direct his heart out, but play the titular character, P.O. Box Tinto Brass is a film that I have personally wanted to watch in 4K for the longest time now.
Sitting in an office with his secretary Lucia (Cinzia Roccaforte), the basic plot is that Brass reads real-life letters and fantasies sent in by female fans, using them to frame nine separate softcore vignettes. Running at 93 glorious minutes (I would have wanted more, but I will take what I am given), the film acts as a direct, unfiltered look at Brass’s personal fetishes and so-named gyno-gaze.
Instead of a traditional plot, it functions like an adult-themed sketch show or an Italian Red Shoe Diaries, if you please, where he dramatizes these deeply personal female-penned sexual confessions one after the other. On a base level, they can be simply viewed as a playful, honest peak into his mid-90s style, sometimes taken as lacking a genuine narrative momentum with not much visual flair accompanied (compared to his earlier work), I think you get what you want out of it either way.
To give you a prime example of that, the first story out the gate features a couple, Milena (Laura Gualtieri) and her boyfriend getting hot and heavy on some beach dunes when they suddenly realize they are being watched by another couple, who are also in the throes of passion themselves! So, what do they do? Well, each couple then naturally decides to put on one heck of a voyeuristic show for the other, of course!
In another a rather lonely wife Rosella (Gabrielle Barbuti, The Passion of the Christ) succumbs to the temptation of phone sex with a stranger, while Francesca (Carla Solaro, Paprika) is introduced to the liberating swinger lifestyle by her husband, to the delight of both!
And aside from the usual kind of things you would expect from a Tinto Brass 4K Blu-ray release as far as special features go, well, one of the genuine stand outs here for me is the interview with Brass (from 1995) discussing his outlook on life and cinema. With a rather splendid 20-Page illustrated booklet complete with essay by Eugenio Ercolani also now included.
