Jurassic Shark 4: Metal Machine Mako [DVD]
(Natalie Himmelberger, Valerie Miller, Titus Himmelberger, Michael Korotitsch, Tim Hatch, Jeff Kirkendall, et al / DVD / NR / 2026 / Wild Eye Releasing)
Overview: A monstrous Megalodon, long thought destroyed, resurfaces off the coast of Katzman Cove after being resurrected by a parasitic alien space amoeba, an otherworldly force capable of infecting and controlling both sea life and humans.
As brutal attacks devastate the beachside community and panic threatens to collapse the local economy, government agents Pickford and Meadows are deployed by Project Chariot to eliminate the prehistoric killer once and for all, piloting a state-of-the-art mechanical predator -- The Metal Mako -- in a high-tech battle for control of the ocean.
DVD Verdict: As you might already be able to guess, this is an ultra-low-budget indie monster movie from prolific indie filmmaker Mark Polonia (Sharkula, Sharkenstein, Amityville in Space). It is, as you can also clearly see, the next chapter in his long-running Jurassic Shark sharksploitation saga, expanding the outrageous mythology with alien invasions, killer machines, and more prehistoric terror.
They stepped up their CG game a little with the shark looking quite a bit better than previously (in my humble opinion) and only utilizing some of the previous CG work from the last films. There was a scene in particular about the shark swimming past a boat that I thought looked pretty good overall.
Though not perfect I would say that the production here was better than the other three Jurassic Shark movies, so maybe the budget expanded a little bit for this fourth endeavor. The shark puppet utilized at the end was entertaining and it made me think that maybe I would rather have had the movie revolve around it instead of it coming out to play close to the end, so to speak.
A cornerstone of the shot-on-video underground, Polonia continues to deliver insane, no-budget creature features that embrace his love for classic monster cinema with his unique touch.
The perfect movie to put on while you’re building furniture and barely paying attention, that is most definitely for sure. I mean, the storyline could be straight out of a paperback novel you’d find in a grocery store and trust me when I say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all!
