Overview: 1970’s New York Grindhouse Super Stars Triple Feature (Kathy’s Graduation / School of Sexual Arts / Tycoon’s Daughter) salutes Shaun Costello and NYC Adult Cinema Legends Annie Sprinkle, Jennifer Jordan and More!
Out of the New York adult film industry of the 1970’s rose a handful of stars and directors, who through talent or sheer perseverance, will be recognized through the ages! NEW YORK GRINDHOUSE SUPERSTARS TRIPLE FEATURE salutes adult film director Shaun Costello and cast in this astonishing three-film collection!
DVD Verdict: First up is TYCOON’S DAUGHTER (1973) and is the story of when - steady now - a tycoon’s daughter is kidnapped! So too screams the headline of the New York Times as kidnappers Marc Stevens and Mary Stewart hole up on the farm of a sexually devious backwoods family!
OK, in all truth, this one is a bit of a goofy kidnap comedy in which three incompetent thugs abduct the daughter of a wealthy diamond mining merchant and demand a king’s ransom for her safe return.
It kinda loses its own plot after five minutes, sporadically returning to find the kidnapped heiress (who rarely seems to be suffering any duress) being escorted around farmland, willingly poked and plundered with escape seemingly furthest from her tiny mind. There’s no substantial effort made to advance nor resolve the abduction plot which is effectively abandoned by the third act in favor of a series of random sexual encounters!
The performers (mostly Marc Stevens) goof off, flub their dialogue and generally contribute as little as possible from a dramatic point of view, though of course that’s not the point here, so it’s a take it or leave it proposition; mildly amusing for the bare investment made by churn ’em out pulp pornographer Shaun Costello (who appears briefly as the man walking past the newspaper stand at the intro).
Then we get KATHY’S GRADUATION PRESENT (1975) where a frigid virgin Kathy has just graduated with straight A’s! But at her party, her horny friends decide to give her another kind of exam ... one they hope she’ll pass with straight X’s!
There was a time in the early to mid-’70s when Albinoni’s Adagio seemed to get used ad nauseam in just about everything irrespective of the tone (e.g. Bible, in the Beginning, Teenage Hitchhikers ’73/’74 spring to mind) and Shaun Costello borrows it again here for a fetid bathtub scene that might be the most ill-fitting use I’ve yet seen/ heard.
That said, the bubbly Annie Sprinkle is probably the best thing about this clearly improvised work of art, a dreamy home movie that looks more like a private sex party with a film camera than a determined effort to make a commercial hardcore comedy (although I suspect it still turned a profit).
Then comes the third and final film SCHOOL FOR THE SEXUAL ARTS (1975) where we find that the female students at the School for the Sexual Arts are busy studying the male form and learning how to use their mouths to mold flaccid members into hard life sculptures! It’s sexpressionistic!
Costello’s improvised porn films are an acquired taste, but this is one of the more entertaining ones. A jazz/rock score accompanies the shenanigans on a college campus, with deep throating emphasized and a surprisingly large role afforded a black actress who I didn’t recognize. Cast is into the sex scenes, and they were more than aroused, trust me! Besides an art class setting and the usual personal tutorials, film ends up with a 9-person orgy featuring Costello himself!
