Overview: A group of college pledges are sent to a crumbling mansion for initiation, but the night turns deadly when a deranged professor (Brad Dourif) begins killing them one by one. Trapped inside, they must uncover his motive - and the possible traitor in their ranks.

DVD Verdict: Blending slasher tropes with supernatural overtones and satire, The Hazing delivers kinetic early-2000s indie energy with a cast packed full of cult favorites and practical effect set-pieces.

What begins as a frat-house prank quickly mutates into a night of betrayal, black magic, and relentless carnage, building toward a finale that tears the veil off both the killer’s identity and the deadly secrets buried within the mansion’s walls. In truth, I watched this movie despite many warnings, and I have to say that I am glad that I did. I picked it up to begin with because I was a fan of cheesy horror, and The Hazing more than satisfied my need for blood.

The story itself is cliché, a couple of teens stay overnight in a haunted house in order to gain entrance into a fraternity/sorority, right after an interesting scavenger hunt. The action starts from there, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Great performances by Tiffany Shepis and Brad Douriff keeps you on your toes during this hilarious adventure with many good laughs and a refreshing feel to the entire genre. Jeremy Maxwell keeps the pace with his great sense of humor, and even the music isn’t as annoying as I had expected it to be.

It’s more a supernatural horror type with book of spells, witchcraft, demons, body spirits. The cast is decent, acting is passable enough. The plot starts off intriguing then becomes further silly, but it’s totally excepted. And, of course, there are a few brief scenes of skin. Both woman characters are different but easily the highlights.

For fans of over-the-top effects, eccentric villains, and old-school body-count thrills, The Hazing is an initiation night nobody graduates from!
