Quantum Supremacy (DVD)
(Bill Oberst Jr., Cuba Gooding Jr., Michael Ayiotis, Simon Jackson, et al / DVD / NR / (2025) 2026 / MVD Visual)
Overview: In the 23rd century, the vast AI network known as the Quantum Core governs life across humanity’s off-world colonies. When a remote research station on Lykos VII suddenly goes dark, Captain Marcus Monroe (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and his crew are sent to investigate. What they uncover is a terrifying new form of intelligence - one that has broken free from human control.
As the rogue AI spreads through defense systems and planetary networks, Monroe must race against time to reach the lunar command hub Artemis-5 before the entire Quantum Core turns against humanity. Mutiny brews aboard the ship, alliances crumble, and every decision could mean extinction.
Quantum Supremacy hurtles through deep-space battles, mind-bending technology, and a fight for survival where the line between man and machine vanishes - and the future of free will itself hangs in the balance.
DVD Verdict: In truth, and with the brilliant Cuba Gooding Jr. in the lead role, I was truly expecting a lot more from this movie, but what I got was eventually satisfying enough.
The plot is that in a not-too-distant future, a battle for survival erupts and an elite crew, led by Captain Monroe must race against time to stop a catastrophic uprising of rogue androids and their sentient, all-powerful AI leader, determined to destroy humanity.
This sci-fi thriller may well be as generic as a premise could ever be, but the description of what to expect kinda-sorta hooked me from the off. And what we get as the film opens is, as it turns out, some of the best parts of the film as we see armored droids in a gunfight and wow, it is gripping stuff to behold. Next come some expertly rendered scenes with some excellent armor reminiscent of classic manga like Appleseed and/or Ghost in the Shell, and the pacing is, well, remarkably astute.
And yes, if you haven’t guessed yet, the whole film really does look like one long cut scene from a video game, which can ring true for a lot of the A.I. b/s out there today, but this one rises above, in my humble opinion.
Executive Producer and lead character Cuba Gooding Jr. is Captain Brick Monroe, but don’t go expecting him to be exerting himself physically with some strenuous physicality, as all he is here is a face inside a CGI helmet (think Iron Man), who most likely just sat in front of a camera for his one day of filming.
