Windrider: Special Edition MVD Rewind Collection
(Nicole Kidman, Tom Burlinson, Charles Tingwell, et al / Blu ray / R / (1986) 2018 / MVD Rewind)
Overview: PC Simpson is an enthusiastic surfer. With the help of his father's company's engineer Howard he develops a high tech surf board for the coming world surf championship. But then he falls in love with the singer Jade - and sport, friends and championship suddenly all become secondary.
Blu-ray Verdict: It seems like they made a movie like this for every cool activity in the '80s, and since windsurfing was at the height of its popularity it got the treatment too.
Indeed, think 'Top Gun' with much lower stakes and one tenth the budget! Despite a bad script and some marginal acting, I actually enjoyed this movie. Forget about the cliché plot and you can actually get a kick out of the clothes and hair and all the other '80s elements.
The film is shot in Australia so for an American it was fun to pick out the cultural differences as well. Also, Nicole Kidman stars as a rock star (although it's a damn pity that it's revealed in the end credits that her "singing" was actually dubbed by someone else; for 'Moulin Rouge' showed she was quite capable of doing it herself), putting on a good performance and giving the film an excuse to fill the soundtrack with some era appropriate synth cheese.
The windsurfing scenes will only appeal to the real hard core since the sport has changed so much in the last couple decades, but again I enjoyed the look back.
Oh, and for those always searching for this knowledge, yes, there is a breathtaking shot of Nicole's bare butt included! There is even a quick shot of Nicole's side nips in the shower, if that floats your boat even more.
So, in closing, if you like windsurfing, or huge waves crashing on Australian beaches, and seeing Kidman's butt, you'll also like 'Windrider' for those reasons and more. Like a pretty decent story line with tension rising towards the end. Sure, the scriptwriter's attempts at humor - and the briefly-glimpsed plastic shark - are a bit embarrassing, but you've got to roll with the punches when you watch an old '80s movies!
