‘A Fanatic Heart: Bob Geldof on W.B. Yeats’
(Bob Dylan, Arlethia Lindsey, Sounds Of Blackness, Shirley Caesar, Dottie Peoples, et al / DVD / NR / 2018 / MVD Visual)

Ocerview: Through performances of some of Yeats' most iconic poems by leading Irish and British cultural figures, Geldof reveals how Yeats and others built the scaffolding of a new independent Ireland decades before the Rising.

But how Yeats' vision for a modern, pluralist, inclusive Ireland was pushed aside by the narrow-minded Catholic elite of the new Free State: the ''Banana Republic'' that Geldof in turn rebelled against half a century later, is also brought forth here, of course.

Verdict: ‘A Fanatic Heart’ is a captivating tale of mythology, nation-building, insurgency and disillusion - and how one man dreamed an entire country out of the ravages of famine and into a new dawn.

With performances of Yeats' poems by Sting, Noel Gallagher, Edna O'Brien, Bono, Van Morrison, Olivia O'Leary, Liam Neeson, Stephen Fry, Dominic West, Richard E. Grant, Bill Nighy, Anne Enright, Colin Farrell, Ardal O'Hanlon, Shane MacGowan, and more, ’A Fanatic Heart’ is one the finest examples of how to construct a documentary, that you will ever witness.

Chock full of 73 poetry readings and 23 discussion pieces, for those not in the know, W.B. Yeats was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, he helped to found the Abbey Theatre, and in his later years served as an Irish Senator for two terms.

Indeed, Yeats was also a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival along with Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn and others. It’s very obvious that Geldof obviously had a great enthusiasm for this subject matter, as well as an enduring resentment of what has happened to Ireland since 1922.

The country might have achieved independence, but at what cost? Sometimes Geldof's script seemed a little florid in tone, with his talent for words running away with him somewhat, but this shortcoming is offset by his willingness to find out more about his subject.

Including a CD featuring readings from the award winning documentary, there’s also a new song set around the poem, 'A Terrible Beauty is Born,' which features a vocal by Bono (which Geldof coordinated for the DVD extras). This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
