Title - Looking Back
Artist - Winter

For those of you not in the know, in autumn 2021 the dark / gothic rock project WINTER released the critically acclaimed album Pale Horse on CD as well as on double vinyl.

As the musical history of the project goes back even further and earlier releases are not available anymore, demands were made for previous songs.

Therefore, it was decided to revise the best songs of the back catalogue and release them in form of a re-release called Looking Back. All songs were re-recorded and re-mastered at the renowned Finnvox Studio.

In spring 2022 a 12” vinyl featuring 12 tracks was released. However, the demand for a CD release and the fact that some songs did not make it on the vinyl due to the total running time caused the pressing of a special edition of Looking Back – a digipak CD limited to 300 copies, hand numbered and featuring four additional bonus tracks!

1. We Believe In Rock
2. Coming Home [Bonus]
3. Heartbreak Road
4. The Flyer
5. Child Of Everdream
6. Blood Red Vengeance
7. Princess Of The Night
8. Beneath The Blue [Bonus]
9. We Wear Black
10. Angel [Bonus]
11. Bleeding Heart
12. On The Run [Bonus]
13. I Stand Alone
14. Gasoline
15. A Love Worth Dying For
16. Take It Slow

Opening on the rock encyclopedia told within the melodic We Believe In Rock and the brilliant AOR of Coming Home, they are themselves followed by the harder-edged, Chris Isaak-imbibed Heartbreak Road, the rhythmic The Flyer, the gentle, laid low goth-metal vibe of Child Of Everdream, the low slung rocker Blood Red Vengeance, the guitar rock ’n’ roll of Princess Of The Night, and then we get the paced AOR melodies within Blood Red Vengeance and the sweepingly magnificent Beneath The Blue.

Next up is the goth-lite We Wear Black and the shimmeringly euphoric balladry of Angel and they are in turn backed seamlessly by the dramatic stance within Bleeding Heart, the foot to the floor rocker On The Run, the heavy guitar rock of I Stand Alone, then comes the free flowing Gasoline, the album rounding out on the Billy Idol-esque A Love Worth Dying For and then the piano-imbued, mid-tempo balladry of Take It Slow.

Compared to the rather dark gothic rock atmosphere on Pale Horse, the sound of Looking Back is more located in the genres of AOR / hard rock or singer / songwriter.

The opener “We Believe In Rock” is a powerful, straightforward rock song with a bow to the great icons of rock music (from Elvis Presley to the Ramones, from Nirvana to Korn or Hammerfall). Indeed, the best songs from WINTER’s past now shine with the sound of the present.

Tracks like “Heartbreak Road” with their country rock vibes, pounding rock songs like “On The Run” and the wonderful ballad “Take It Slow” demonstrate impressively the range of the project. At the same time, the gothic rock roots are still very much present in songs like “I Stand Alone” or “A Love Worth Dying For” (which is also available as a video clip).

All in all, Looking Back is an extremely varied journey into the evolutionary history of WINTER which will be continued this autumn with the release of the next album Fire Rider.
