Title - 'At The BBC 1972-1982: 4 Disc Boxset Edition'
Artist - Todd Rundgren

Todd (Harry) Rundgren is, as I'm sure you are all well aware by now, an American multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and record producer. Hailed in the early stage of his career as a new pop star, supported by the certified gold solo double LP Something/Anything? in 1972, his career has produced a diverse range of recordings, both as a solo artist and as a member of the band Utopia. He has also been prolific as a producer and engineer on the recorded work of other musicians.

At The BBC 1972-1982: 4 Disc Boxset Edition from Esoteric Recordings is the very first time ever that these recordings have been officially released. And boy, what a dandy collection of goodies, a true treasure trove this little lot is!

Containing 26 live audio tracks spread over three CDs, and a DVD (NTSC / Region Free) disc of 14 live performances, some not even originally broadcast, some simply promotional videos, they bring together all of the surviving radio and television broadcasts in the BBC archive transmitted on radio and television in the UK between 1972 and 1982.

A feat all of its own to have compiled, for sure, but one worth delving into it you are a Rundgren fan; or simply a fan of historical, legendary music, in general, of course. The set features his solo 1972 BBC Radio One "In Concert” performance, recorded soon after the release of his seminal album, Something Anything?, and brings to us now-classic 'I Saw The Light,' along with others such as 'Piss Aaron, ' Be Nice To Me,' and 'Black Maria.'

Next up is the classic, beloved UK show, "Old Grey Whistle Test” where in 1975 Todd Rundgren and Utopia laid down a session that included both 'Real Man' and 'The Seven Rays.' The second disc then takes us back to 1975 for another BBC Radio One "In Concert” performance, again with Utopia, where they brings us sensational tracks such as 'Freedom Fighters,' 'Something's Coming,' 'The Last Ride,' 'The Wheel,' and both 'Sons of 1984' and 'Couldn't I Just Tell You.'

The third audio disc showcases the last of the BBC Radio One "In Concert” performances, this one from 1977, and introduces us to the tracks 'Love Of The Common Man, ' Sunburst Finish,' 'Jealousy,' and the now infamous, 'Utopia Theme.'

The fourth disc, the DVD is a banding together of various performances that range from en masse of the UK show, "Old Grey Whistle Test” live moments through to a film of Todd Rundgren & Utopia at the Bearsville Picnic in 1977; where they perform ‘Singring and the Glass Guitar’! Also included in this simply terrific boxset are the entire recordings made for a 1982 solo Todd Rundgren "Old Grey Whistle Test" special, which include two songs not even featured on the original TV broadcast!

His best-known songs may well include 'Hello It's Me' and 'I Saw the Light,' which have heavy rotation on classic rock radio stations even today; and 'Bang the Drum All Day,' which is featured in many sports arenas, commercials, and movie trailers, but it's these lesser known gems, from a time gone by, that - especially live - can never be heard or seen again (unless you have this 4-disc boxset, of course).
