BBC Studios Holiday Gift Guide

The wondrous BBC Studios Holiday Gift Guide this year features festive products from the BBC Shop, as well as an up-to-date look at all their great catalog titles!

In fact, once you've read this article, please be sure to visit their newly relaunched BBC Shop at www.shop.bbc.com for all of these holiday gifts noted below and more!

Kicking things off here with a peak into the BBC Studios Shop and we find lovely items such as an Orkney Dashing Dogs mug, a Heavy Herringbone Grey Throw, a Lambswool Throw (Blue Plaid), a rather stunning Glencairn Whiskey Glass, and a Ladies Cape (Blue Plaid), a Baseball Cap and Alpaca Scarf set, some Bulldog Fudge and a Bulldog Ornament, and even a Corgi Doormat!

They've also got some Racing Santa Christmas Crackers, British Ornament Sets for your Christmas Tree, some beautiful Heritage Candles, Glamorous Cocktails, a book on how to mix the perfect drink, a London Tea selection contained within a very colorful Big Ben tin, some traditional Lily Puds Christmas pudding, and a TARDIS Gingerbread House and a traditional TARDIS with wreath ornaments, et al.

Under their Home Entertainment banner, well, what a lot of goodies we behold here this holiday season!

First up is the 'Good Omens' Blu-ray/DVD (It takes good and evil to save the world in this adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s cult novel, starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant), a quite magnificent 'Planet Earth II: 4K Ultra HD' 4-Disc Blu-ray, and a splendid 'Dynasties: 4K Ultra HD' Blu-ray package too!

Add to that mix the always-brilliant old school Doctor Who re-releases and this year our top pick is the 'Colin Baker: Complete Season Two' 6-Disc Blu-ray collection.

The remastering job on this set is quite exquisite, even if the season has itself been much maligned down the years by most all Doctor Who fans (although not me, for the record).

After an 18 month hiatus, the Doctor returned with Peri by his side to take on the Valeyard as he is put on trial by the Time Lords. This season also saw the exit of Peri (in "Mindward") and the introduction of Mel (weirdly) mid-season (in "The Terror of the Vervoids").

This season is "The Trial of a Time Lord" season; like the Tom Baker "Key to Time" series, there is an arc for the entire season, which consisted of four serials ("The Mysterious Planet", "Mindward", "The Terror of the Vervoids", and "The Ultimate Foe").

There are only a total of 14 25-minute shows ("The Ultimate Foe" is a 2-part story; the others are 4-parts), but they gel together wonderfully and for all Doctor Who fans, the season is still masterfully shot and acted.

Furthermore, this was actually quite a turbulent time for Doctor Who for the show was in trouble with BBC management. The script editor (Eric Saward) and John Nathan-Turner didn't get along, resulting in Saward quitting the show; and Robert Holmes died before he could finish the series.

The storyline is that two ships have crashed after a space battle, but the planet they have landed on is about to be destroyed. The beautiful female Drahvins seem friendly, but in fact it is the ugly Rills that are more tolerant and forgiving toward the Sixth Doctor and his companion(s).
