20th Century Fox Has Got You COVERED For This Holiday Period!

Exclusive Magazine's 20th Century Fox Holiday Gift Guide [2015] this year includes en mass of INCREDIBLE new Home Entertainment DVDs and Blu-rays! Below you will find a mixture of the titles kindly sent to us for review, and information on those also being released this Holiday season:

'Empire: Season 1 - Gold Record Edition' [Blu-ray]

(Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Jussie Smollett, Trai Byers, et al / 4Disc Blu-ray + 1CD / NR / 2015)

Overview: After music mogul Lucious Lyon (Oscar® Nominee Terrence Howard) is diagnosed with a potentially fatal disease, he must choose which of his three sons will succeed him at the legendary EMPIRE entertainment company. The game changes when ex-wife Cookie (Oscar® Nominee Taraji P. Henson) returns from prison.

DVD Verdict: 'Empire' is definitely captivating, that's for damn sure! The drama, the music, the actors/actresses just all make for one heck of a show. It touches on so many issues we deal with in today's society and brings them to the forefront: Bi-polar disorder, ALS, sexuality, dysfunctional families, following your dreams, standing up for yourself/confidence, being able to move beyond your circumstances and so many other things.

I am especially happy to see these things being touched on so that it can open the dialog to deal with these issues, especially in the Black community. Taraji's character illustrates a mother's love and how she will do anything even sacrifice her freedom to ensure her family will escape the perils of poverty and life in the slums. Terrance's character shows how money can change you and when you loose yourself in the process you also loose so much more. A man that choose his dream over love and now regrets it while living in two worlds his old and his new.

I could go on, but I urge you to tune in and see it for yourself. But, that said, if you are not close to watching season two live on TV just yet, check out this INCREDIBLE Gold Record Edition Box-Set for yourself, and not only see where it all started, but listen to the added bonus of an INCREDIBLE bonus audio CD of original music from the show! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:

'A.D. The Bible Continues' [Blu-ray]

(Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, et al / 4Disc Blu-ray / G / 2015)

Overview: From executive producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett comes 'A.D. The Bible Continues' the spectacular 12-part series that picks up where The Bible left off. This powerful spiritual journey begins with the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, chronicling the heroic acts and sacrifices of His early followers during the most tumultuous of times as they change the course of human history.

Blu-ray Verdict: Well, OK, taking this review from my standpoint, as a Christian, I have learned to never trust Hollywood with Bible stories. After all, isn't Hollywood run mostly by "Satan's cronies," anyway? Bible stories are very powerful - as written and described in the Bible. When Hollywood rewrites the script, much is inevitably left out and the result is diluted mush.

However, and that all said, I think the people behind 'A.D. The Bible Continues' have displayed a refreshing sense of reverence and faithfulness to the Scripture in their mini-series of a story. Still, much is left out - but very little is changed, so to speak.

Many of the scenes in the episodes are very powerful. In particular, I appreciated the scene where the Roman soldier approached Pilate and informed him that Jesus was certainly killed. This is an important detail, given the many "resurrection-debunkers" who claim that Jesus was not on the cross long enough to die.

I also appreciated the majesty of the scene where the angel descended and rolled the stone away from Jesus' tomb. While both of these scenes do not usually make the cut in other movies about the life of Jesus, I believe that they effectively put skin on an otherwise all-too-familiar story.

Overall, the acting is very solid and, as you may well have already read-between-the-lines on here, I get a very strong sense of the evangelical zeel of the early church, and a good sense of hanging on by a knifes edge. Love is a huge part of this story. It is blatantly contrasted with the bigotry, hatred, back-stabbing, brutality, and scheming that goes on in the Temple and the Palace of Justice.

For instance, when you watch Mary Magdalene embrace a weeping man, who just confessed to murdering one of her closest friends, and she tells him that all is forgiven because he is a new man in Christ, well, doesn't it make you second guess all the petty hatred for your neighbor (sometimes, quite literally) that you have continually pent up? [It should, by the way!]

Anyway, and finally, whether or not one has accepted Christ into their heart, there is no denying the polish and accuracy of this episode when compared to other interpretations of the story. Of course, it's not 'The Passion of the Christ' or 'The Gospel According to St. Matthew,' but it is impressive. Christians, I believe, will be especially impressed. I was, and that alone is saying something, in this day and age! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1:85.1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:

'Vikings Season 3' [Blu-ray]

(Travis Fimmel, George Blagden, Clive Standen, et al / 3Disc Blu-ray / NR / 2015)

Overview: Prepare to raid and wage battle once again, in an ancient kingdom dominated by vengeance, lust and thrilling conquest, in Season 3 of 'Vikings'. The gripping family saga of Ragnar, Rollo, Lagertha and Bjorn continues as loyalties are questioned and bonds of blood are tested.

Blu-ray Verdict: My goodness, the Viking era is (was) an exciting one! I'm glad to see this series have continued success, because too often of late, we are getting our history from film, not books. So, perhaps a new generation can come to know this culture. We are getting a glimpse of a very unique, if savage way of life that helped shape Europe here in TV's incredible 'The Vikings'.

The series itself has a wealth of legend to draw from and fill several seasons. The series opened in 793 AD, however, Ragnar's fate is beyond that. Like Spartacus, he is a legendary figure and the writers of this series have a lot to play with in what was Europe's Dark Ages.

Progressing onward from there through season two, we now find ourselves knee deep in the dirt and grime, love and betrayal of season three. [For those not attune to the first two seasons, I won't delve into those here, but do find the time for yourself to have a crack at both; you'll love them, trust me] Anyway, as season three opens we first see Ragnar, a man who is, quite literally as well as figuratively higher than he's ever been!

Having defeated the kings and jarls that would have betrayed him and killed his family, Ragnar now sits with his eldest son on a clifftop overlooking his home. There they make plans to return to England - not on a raid, as has previously been the case, but to claim the land promised them by King Ecbert and start a new life as farmers.

England, of course, has other plans. In exchange for his help, Ecbert wants Ragnar and his warriors to assist his ally Princess Kwenthrith of Mercia to defeat her uncle and brother and reclaim her throne. Life as a mercenary is not what Ragnar wants, but most of his men - including his son Bjorn - are eager for the battlefield. The rest, as they say here in season three, is history! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:

'True Story' [Blu-ray + Digital HD]

(James Franco, Jonah Hill, Ethan Suplee, et al / Blu-ray / R / 2015)

Overview: When disgraced New York Times reporter Michael Finkel meets accused killer Christian Longo - who has taken on Finkel's identity - his investigation morphs into a game of cat-and-mouse.

Blu ray Verdict: Quote from Michael Finkel: "It's not easy to relate to someone accused of four murders, but everybody understands a child needing a toy." As you may, or may not know, 'True Story' is actually based on, well, ... actual events! Indeed, it was very unusual, yet interesting and visually stimulating to see both Jonah and James playing roles so out of their ordinary type. Hill portrays Michael Finkel, The New York Times journalist who is subsequently terminated by the paper after being accused of incomplete research and creating a composite character, a boy named Youssouf Male while covering a story in an article about Ivory Coast Cocoa Plantations.

After being let go by The Times, Finkel (Hill) struggles to find journalistic job opportunities until one day he receives a mysterious phone call from a man regarding an FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation Most Wanted individual named Christian Longo, portrayed by Franco, who is wanted for murdering his entire family and is eventually captured in México while claiming to be living as Finkel. Finkel decides this is an opportunity story of a life time, so he meets with Longo trying to figure out why his now tarnished journalistic name was used by this accused murderer.

Finkel agrees to share his journalistic expertise with Longo in exchange for information regarding the murders for his Murder Memoir which tells a "True Story" regarding the events portrayed in the film. While in Newport, Oregon County Jail awaiting trial, Longo corresponds with Finkel via U.S. Mail, sending him written clues which appear to be confusing and misleading about his family life, yet enough information to put the pieces of the puzzle together and compile a Murder Memoir. Finkel attends the trial and at the end he uncovers the "true story."

The film has several twists and turns which will keep you interested. It was cool to see both Hill and Franco play roles no one would ever think they would take on. Both actors handled this film brilliantly! Not a must see, but definitely worth seeing if you want to experience these veteran actor Academy Award Nominees in diverse roles. 'Paper Towns' [Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD]

(Nat Wolff, Cara Delevingne, Austin Abrams, Justice Smith, et al / Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD / PG-13 / 2015)

Overview: Adapted from the best-selling novel by The Fault in Our Stars author John Green comes this unforgettable film starring Nat Wolff and Cara Delevingne. Ever since they were children, Quentin (Wolff) has been in love with his enigmatic neighbor Margo (Delevingne). So when Margo recruits Quentin for a prank-filled night of adventure, Quentin leaps at the opportunity.

Blu-ray Verdict: 'Paper Towns' follows Quentin (Nat Wolff) , or "Q" as he is more popularly called, a high school boy who has been nursing an unrequited love for the girl living next door, Margo (Cara Delevigne) since childhood. Even after when they turn 12, when Margo suddenly becomes distant, "Q" never loses the affection, and it only becomes even stronger when one day she climbs again to his window, the way she did when they were still kids.

The next events follow an eager "Q" savoring the moment as he escorts Margo in her series of "small revenge" against those she thinks have betrayed her, including her ex-boyfriend. But the levitating moment would only last overnight, because the next day, the ever mystifying Margo, disappears.

Mining on the same overly familiar material that dwells on both coming-of-age and teenage romance territories, 'Paper Towns' pulls off two easily-recognizable efforts: maintaining 'The Fault In Our Stars's charm, while toning down its tragic notions. The latter of which, yields a more tangible and heartwarming result, capable of conjuring a lasting tug at the heartstrings. The credit for this goes to its equally-charming yet capable actors, both of whom teeming with fresh and enigmatic likability. It will also sound unforgivable to never pay regard to the film's brilliant screenwriters who manage to cleverly highlight this extremely familiar high school tale's stronger and more relative sentiments, genuinely and sincerely enough, to bend fragile emotions with crippling capacity. 'Edward Scissorhands: 25th Anniversary' [Blu-ray]

(Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Anthony Michael Hall, et al / Blu-ray + Digital HD / PG-13 / 2015)

Overview: Celebrate the 25th anniversary of this beloved masterpiece starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton. Depp delivers the performance that launched his career, as Edward, an irresistibly charming creation with razor-sharp metal hands and a heart of gold.

Blu-ray Verdict: Well, if you haven't seen this film yet, you must be insane because this film is a true cinematic masterpiece! Edward is found by Peg, the local Avon representative, when she goes up to the mansion/castle he lives in to look for customers. Seeing that he is all alone (his father, the Inventor "never woke up") and has frighteningly large scissors in place of hands, she decides to bring him home so that she can give him a new lease of life.

When Edward arrives, the quiet little neighborhood goes into a frenzy over the sweet, innocent young man who has scissors for hands. However, falling in love with Peg's daughter and getting in with the wrong crowd gets Edward into trouble, and things can only get worse! 'Edward Scissorhands' is one of Tim Burton's best creations, and deserves more than everything that is heaped praise, trust me!

The acting is all very good, especially from Johnny Depp as Edward, and Vincent Price's small part as The Inventor. It is so symbolic - Edward reaches out for help, but who would be willing to take his scissors in their hands? The part in which the Inventor dies when presenting his creation with his set of hands, skewering them onto Edward's scissors as he collapses really shows that Edward will never be 'normal', he will never be finished without them.

Like other young people, he wants to be normal, and when he is presented with the chance to get real, normal hands, he is excited, but unfortunately, he never gets the chance. That is very symbolic of the young person's wish to change, just to be like everyone else, and the painful realization that it cannot be done. Edward's scissor-hands reflect differences in people that make others unwilling to accept, and many young people feel the same way as Edward does. I believe that this wonderfully spectacular film represents the situation in which a society is unwilling to accept people who they feel are different, something I think we can all relate to. 'Santa's Little Helper' [DVD + Digital HD]

(Mike "The Miz" Mizanin, AnnaLynne McCord, Eric Keenleyside, et al / DVD / PG / 2015 / 20th Century Fox)

Overview: Ho-ho-hold on tight for holiday hijinks in this hilarious family comedy starring WWE Superstar Mike "The Miz" Mizanin, WWE Diva Paige and AnnaLynne McCord. After losing his job, a slick-talking businessman is given the chance of a lifetime to be Santa s second-in-command. But to earn the coveted position, he ll have to wage an outrageous battle against a scheming elf who wants the gig for herself!

DVD Verdict: My goodness. In a world filled with en masse of Christmas films, each one trying to wring the same "good feeling" out of the same amount of TV time, it is genuinely lovely to come across a "new" Christmas film - that a) doesn't take itself too seriously and b) has some very likely, and WWE-bankable stars fronting it also!

After getting fired from his job, a slick, fast-talking businessman (WWE's "The Miz") is thrown into an elf competition to become Santa¹s next second-in-command. Put through a series of rigorous training exercises to prepare for the contest, "The Miz" (Dax) and another aspiring elf (WWE's Diva Paige) go head-to-head in the hopes of becoming Santa's Little Helper.

For "The Miz" to be fronting this movie is spectacular in its own right. He actually first gained fame as a cast member on MTV's The Real World: Back to New York, which first aired in 2001, and its spin off series, Real World/Road Rules Challenge. He later entered the fourth season of Tough Enough, a televised competition which awarded the winner a WWE contract, and became the first runner-up.

"The Miz" then trained and wrestled in independent/developmental territories Ultimate Pro Wrestling, Deep South Wrestling, and Ohio Valley Wrestling prior to appearing in WWE. Thus, his career as a actor was hardly anything driven, but like most WWE wrestlers these days, they seemingly have this unique knack of timing and bodily expression and so that combined with learning lines is all they need to take the vehicle and drive it into our hearts (hopefully) each time.

His "bad Elf," so to speak. is played by his ring buddy, Diva Paige. The usually raven-haired Diva, who now sports a much darker do here in 'Santa's Little Helper' has always (via the ring) preached a simple message: She wants to fight! But it seems now she actually wants to act - and does it very, very nicely too. She gained prominence inside the NXT Arena as the first NXT Women's Champion, but watching this very adorable, funny Christmas movie, me thinks she has a career in front of the film cameras looming now also.
