'That Evening Sun'
(Hal Holbrook, Ray McKinnon, Walton Goggins, Mia Wasikowska, Carrie Preston, et al / DVD / PG-13 / 2010 / Anchor Bay Entertainment)

Overview: Fleeing the retirement home where his son abandoned him, Abner Meecham sets out to reclaim his beloved Tennessee farmstead - only to find it's been leased to an old enemy, the volatile Lonzo Choat.

DVD Verdict: This movie, the lazy, hazy 'That Evening Sun' is just - simply put - one of those wonderful dreamscapes of cinematography that all and sudner should watch; no matter who old one may be.

A film that, come its end, will definitely stay with you forever, 'That Evening Sun' stars Hal Holbrook as 'Abner Meecham,' a crusty old boy who escapes from his retirement home and returns to his farm - only to discover that his adult son (Walton Goggins - 'The Shield') has "sold" it to a family that his old man considers to be "white trash"! And so, and in one of Halbrook's finest performances of his long, glittering career, he plays Meecham as a proud, and yet extremely stubborn man; and yet one that has to keep on his given path at all times.

Ergo, he moves into the sharecropper's cabin across from the main house, buys a dog for company, and lays siege to the so-called "intruders." Of course, knowing who they are, and having purchased a dog that won't stop barking, you know it is just a matter of time before events turn in on themselves in a mighty bad way!

Adapted to the screen by director Scott Teems from a short story by William Gay, 'That Evening Sun' is beautiful to behold - with an ending that, trust me, no one would expect! Oh yeah, and on one final note, it also features Holbrook's late wife, Dixie Carter. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
