'The Dick Cavett Show - Baseball's Greatest Hits'
(Dick Cavett, Whitney Ford, Bob Feller, Dizzy Dean, Denny McLain, Mickey Mantle, Leroy "Satchel" Paige, et al / 3-Disc DVD / NR / 2019 / S'More Entertainment / MVD Visual)

Overview: Since 1968, Dick Cavett had been host of his own talk show, in a variety of formats and on a number of television and radio formats.

Here in 'The Dick Cavett Show - Baseball's Greatest Hits: Pitchers,' Cavett interviews some of the greatest major league baseball pitchers of all time!

DVD Verdict: For those not in the official know, 'The Dick Cavett Show' was an 90 minute mixture of talk and variety that ran for six astounding years on late-night prime time television on the ABC-TV network from the first telecast on May 26,1969 to the final episode of the series on August 16th, 1975.

This was at the time one of the most versatile performers who eventually gave us some of the biggest entertainment acts in the history of rock, and went toe to toe with the King of Late Night-Johnny Carson and eventually at the time Merv Griffin for the battle of late night supremacy.

However, Dick Cavett was one of the few television personalities ever to star or host major programs in daytime, prime-time, late night, all in quick succession.

And it wasn't about his failure to attract a large audience with any of them, because his late night talk show brought in some of the largest ratings ever for ABC at the time.

Well praised and received by the critics, his late night show was generally acknowledged to be witty, intelligent, and interesting compared to what was scheduled around them.

'The Dick Cavett Show - Baseball's Greatest Hits: Pitchers' is a wondrous 3-Disc set that contains six episodes where Cavett talks with legendary major league baseball pitchers from the Golden Age of baseball: Satchel Paige, Dizzy Dean, Bob Feller, Whitey Ford, Denny McLain, Vida Blue and Tommy John with special guests including Whitey Ford teammate Mickey Mantle, Paul Simon, Marcel Marceau, Salvador Dali, Robert Altman and others.

Whitey Ford is one of those first up and the interview with both him and Mickey Mantle is a doozy and even includes snippets of Cavett's chat with his first guest, Paul Simon!

They discuss, back and forth about all things baseball and even Canadian survival bomb shelter investments! They even chat about when the ball used to bounce in front of the hitter before being hit!

The show was broadcast on the day Paul McCartney released the statement that the Beatles were breaking up and, of course, Simon & Garfunkel broke up as well!

Another stand out for me is the man of many nicknames Denny McLain. The Cleveland Indian pitcher is interviewed in 1971 by Cavett and comes across very well mannered and highly informative with regard not only his own stats but those of some of this rivals too!

Introduced as the "magnificent Satchel Paige" and inclusive of a trumpet fanfare upon his arrival, Leroy "Satchel" Paige is the true highlight here for me. Featuring on the same show as Salvador Dali (March 6th, 1970), he is equal amounts of fun and information.

Talking about his youth growing up and how he was given three different birth certificates that told three different birth dates - it was always a talking point to what his real age was over the years - Paige explains how he kept his pitching arm in such great shape over the years (no rub, just hot water).

He talks about pitching double headers which would mean three games in one day and how good the teams were back in the black leagues (when breaking records were not even recorded, sadly), and even where his nickname "Satchel" originated.

Also inclusive of Bob Feller, Dizzy Dean, Vida Blue and Tommy John, this incredible 3-Disc DVD set is a must-have for any and all baseball and Dick Cavett fans. This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Bonus Features of Player Bios and Direct Access to Pitcher Interviews!

'The Dick Cavett Show - Baseball's Greatest Hits: Pitchers' [3-DVD] is out June 25th, 2019 via S'More Entertainment / MVD Visual.
