'Sister Street Fighter Collection'
(Sonny Chiba, Etsuko Shiomi, Asao Uchida, et al / 2-Disc Blu-ray / NR / 2019 / Arrow Films UK)

Overview: Genre entertainment of the highest order, the 'Sister Street Fighter' films are a wild ride through some of the best exploitation cinema Japan produced in the 1970s.

Funky and over-the-top, filled with wall-to-wall action, and featuring some of the craziest villains ever depicted onscreen, the series embodies female power in a male-dominated genre and is a magnificent showcase for the physical presence and martial arts skills of its lead star.

Blu-ray Verdict: In 1974's 'Sister Street Fighter', Shihomi is the half-Chinese, half-Japanese Li Koryu, who travels to Yokohama to investigate the disappearance of her brother, an undercover cop.

Li discovers a smuggling ring run by a drug lord with his own personal army of deadly fighters, and must penetrate his evil lair with the help of a fellow karate master (played by Chiba).

Another colorful hypnotic Japanese film full of outrageous dialogue, tons of karate action, and a whole slew of various ancient martial arts weapons are shown in full force throughout; and all for good and glorious reasons.

The choreography is excellent, packed with off beat camera angles, good staging, and a wealth of interesting and exciting locations. The action never lets up, fusing together the successful combinations of sex (a parade of topless starlets) and violence (gratuitous bone-breaking) to provide a satisfying whole.

That same year came 'Sister Street Fighter: Hanging by a Thread' (1974). This time Koryu heads to Yokohama in search of a woman named Birei, kidnapped by diamond smugglers who move their hot rocks by surgically implanting them into the nubile buttocks of Chinese prostitutes.

Koryu's older sister, working as a jewelry designer, is secretly if unhappily involved with the gangsters.

Well, if you thought you've seen it all, think again! This time without Sonny Chiba, the Sister Street Fighter is out to protect a young child who's mother is involved with a gold smuggler/ drug enforcer.

The uncle was a detective who was tending the niece, and is killed by doing it. The Sister Street Fighter leaves Hing Kong with the niece meets up with her friend from class and kick some serious butt at a dock in Japan.

Trust me when I say those two ladies make a great team and even though the reunion of mother and daughter was short-lived, the fight for avenging loved ones goes on non-stop!

In 'Return of the Sister Street Fighter' (1975), when the crime boss has to pick one of his thugs for a fight he takes his knife, throws it to the roof and kills a butterfly with it, then the knife falls to one guy's shoulder and that's the man he's chosen for the job.

Come on now, that's some damn serious inventiveness right there. Am I right! And who's the guys he's gonna fight? That's Yasuaki Kurata of course!

Chock full of lots of action, female nudity, more fighting, some ridiculous Japanese character in black-face, fighting on the rooftops, drugs, burning houses, more nudity, more fights; it just goes on and on!

The last film in this wondrous new Blu-ray collection is 'Sister Street Fighter: Fifth Level Fist' (1976). Although not an official sequel (Shihomi plays a different character), the film is often referred to as a sequel to the series.

Kiku Nakakawa, the only daughter of an old kimono shop owner in Kyoto, is enthusiastic about karate. In order to help her friend Michi avenge her brother, she sneaks into a movie studio in Kyoto where a drug dealing syndicate is based.

So, to my mind, this fourth and final movie of the 'Sister Street Fighter' series makes good use of its comedy elements. From the crazy film crew to Kiku's father who secretly helps her, but would be happier if she was living more traditionally (he is a kimono salesman), each character here has a nice, fully rounded back story which means you care for them more than you expect to. These are all Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
