'Ghost Hunter'
(Rafe Spall, Cara Theobold, Richie Campbell, et al / DVD / NR / 2019 / BBC Home Entertainment)

Overview: 'Ghost Hunter' is a TV-movie about Britain's real-life ghost hunter and skeptic Harry Price, who investigated tales of the paranormal and supernatural.

DVD Verdict: OK, to be quite honest here, and as much as they would like you to believe that this TV-movie is based solely on Harry Price and his ghost hunting / busting abilities, the real life Price was only actually not a scientist; but someone who sold paper bags as a full time job!

That said, Ghost Hunter (otherwise known by it's full title Harry Price: Ghost Hunter is still a rather fun, and entertaining two spent in its detecting and revealing company.

On the surface a fun look at ghostly myth busting whilst containing an underbelly of also being a rather thought-provoking period piece with contemporary and feminist undertones, Ghost Hunter is a period piece that should encourage many to watch it.

The tale is thus: Following World War I (aka The Great War), most British families had lost close family members and so as a result there was extensive interest in the afterlife; the spirit world.

Due to these families wanting to reach out to their loved ones for comfort and knowledge of safe passage to the afterlife, subsequently the fad produced so-called "Supernaturalists"; deceitful men and women keen to cash in on grieving relatives.

Into this environment comes Harry Price "Ghost Hunter," a modern scientist aghast at witnessing these parasites prey on grieving families and seeks to expose both them and their methods.

However, Harry, played brilliantly by Rafe Spall, succumbs to evoking the spirits on behalf of a grieving soldier, but the well-meaning deceit goes dreadfully wrong and his victim commits suicide; leaving Harry bereft.

Months later, we find Harry morose and drifting and yet into his life walks a senior opposition politician with an urgent need for Harry's particular skill set.

It seems a promising politician's wife is being troubled by the dead and only the "Ghost Hunter" can help. Along his journey to unmask the perpetrators and confront the dead, Harry is ably assisted by Downton Abbey's very own Cara Theobold as Sara Green; who, it has to be said, puts in a rather marvelous performance as the hard put-upon maid of the haunted household.

In closing, I found 'Harry Price: Ghost Hunter' to be a really enjoyable story and resolution. Good characters, plot and acting I just wish it had been turned into a series. For it definitely deserved one based on these couple of hours. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
