'Rolling Stones - Voodoo Lounge Uncut'
(Rolling Stones / Blu-ray+2CD / NR / 2018 / Eagle Vision)

Overview: 'Voodoo Lounge Uncut' presents for the first time the full, unedited show filmed in Miami in '94.

Featuring 10 performances omitted from its previous release in the '90s the full show is now presented in its original running order.

Blu-ray Verdict: Originally directed by the legendary David Mallet, for the first time the full, unedited show filmed on November 25th 1994 at Miami’s Joe Robbie Stadium is available - and boy, is it a right royal doozy to behold (both visually and musically).

With its ahead-of-its-time cyberworld staging, guest appearances from Sheryl Crow, Robert Cray and Bo Diddley, and a set list combining classic tracks with (then) new material from the Voodoo Lounge album, this phenomenal show is the Stones at their high-flyin' best, that's for darn sure.

Featuring 10 never-before-seen performances and with the film having been recut from the original rushes and restored, the soundtrack having been remixed and remastered for 2018, 'Voodoo Lounge Uncut' has been watched once and the CDs played twice here already in the office (and it only just arrived!)

Opening, weirdly, with the stadium announcer announcing Whoopi Goldberg (!) and her now-infamous 'Intro' speech ("Hey. Hey. Good evening, Miami. Good evening World. Welcome. I'm here this evening, in Miami to do one thing and one thing only. I'm here to introduce the band that brought music to us, that our parents told us we probably shouldn't be listening to."

"But a lot of our parents are here tonight," she adds, with a sly nod to the packed house before her. "A lot of people have tried to mimic this band, but couldn't do it, because there's only one."

"So, I'm honored and proud and pleased to introduce the world's greatest rock and roll band. ladies and Gentlemen, the Rolling Stones.") that brings forth the instrumental prelude to a very passive, under control, yet slightly extended version of 'Not Fade Away.'

That laid back vibe continues on with 'Tumbling Dice,' before we finally get Mick bouncing around with the upbeat 'You Got Me Rocking,' 'Rocks Off,' and the always-brilliant-to-hear, 'Sparks Will Fly.'

With the complete concert now rounding out to close to 2.5 hours, chock full of the Stones hits and album tracks from (the, as we now know, highly-underrated Voodoo Lounge album), and covering, at last count, about ten of their albums along the way, the guest appearances from Sheryl Crow, Robert Cray and Bo Diddley come and go, to be quite honest.

I mean, this quite phenomenal, breathtaking live show didn't really need such outside involvement, to my mind, but at that time, Crow was winding her way up the charts as the hottest new thing, and, well, the other two were already legends, of course.

Among many hook-laden hit tunes on this colossal live set list, the tracks from the (then new) album included are the aforementioned duo of 'You Got Me Rocking' and 'Sparks Will Fly', the brilliant 'I Go Wild', and the Keith Richards-sung ballad, 'The Worst.'

That said, the five now-included tracks give us a chance to hear another cut from the album in the shape of 'Out Of Tears,' alongside a blistering 'Shattered,' the blues of 'All Down The Line,' the lyrical brilliance of 'I Can't Get Next To You,' and 'Happy.'

Sadly, as I'm a HUGE fan of the Voodoo Lounge album, there's no 'Suck on the Jugular', 'Brand New Car' or 'Blinded by Rainbows,' but at least we're all spared the other Richards ballad, 'Thru and Thru.'

The five extra tracks were, to be completely transparent, all from an earlier date on the tour, but that doesn't change the fact that they add so much more energy to the now-complete set.
