'Smithsonian: Civil War 360'
(DVD / NR / 2018 / Smithsonian Channel)

Overview: 'Civil War 360' explores the conflict from three unique vantage points. Ashley Judd takes a look at The Union, Trace Adkins follows the rise and fall of The Confederacy, and Dennis Haysbert details the harrowing Fight for Freedom waged by the men and women with the most to gain, and the most to lose: the enslaved Americans.

DVD Verdict: This highly interesting three-part series takes us all on a new journey back in time and immerses us in a 150-year-old battle that nearly split our nation in two.

Indeed, this simply fascinating series explores famous and little known aspects of the Civil War, from the perspectives of the Union, the Confederacy and the millions of enslaved people struggling for freedom.

Hosted by Ashley Judd, Trace Adkins, and Dennis Haysbert, all of whom had ancestors greatly affected by the war, this series delivers fresh insights and untold tales, brought to life through dramatic recreations and the Smithsonian Institution's vast collection of artifacts.

In FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, actor Dennis Haysbert looks at the struggles of those enslaved during the Civil War, through the objects in the Smithsonian's collection.

In THE CONFEDERACY, we join country music singer Trace Adkins, whose ancestor fought for the South, as he follows the rise and fall of the Confederacy.

Finally, in THE UNION, actress Ashley Judd takes us back 150 years for an intimate look at the North's battles and struggles through the Civil War.

In truth, and playing Devil's Advocate, there is nothing said here that most all Civil War books don't already cover. If you can make it through the choppy editing, which there is sadly way too much of, the historical artifacts are interesting.

Although, I would recommend a google search on Civil War artifacts before I'd recommend this series, for it will enhance your appreciation of this series ten fold, of that you have my word. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
