'Against The Sun'
(Jake Abel, Garret Dillahunt, Tom Felton, et al / DVD / NR / 2015 / Anchor Bay Entertainment)
Overview: In one of the most harrowing true stories of World War II, three US Navy airmen crash land their torpedo bomber in the South Pacific and find themselves on a tiny life raft, surrounded by open ocean. No food. No water. No hope of rescue. Against incredible odds, these three virtual strangers must survive storms, sharks, starvation and each other as they try to sail more than a thousand miles to safety.
DVD Verdict: After drifting off course a WWII pilot and his crew end up in a tiny lifeboat with no food, water, flares, or any real chance of being rescued. 'Against The Sun' is the incredibly TRUE story of how they did everything the could to survive. Even though this is a true story it is something I had never heard of before. After recently watching Angelina's 'Unbroken,' I was wondering how this would compare.
'Against The Sun' opened with about 10 minutes of interior plane scenes then we plummet straight into the raft. What follows is an hour and a half of tense moments and wondering how this will play out. I would compare this very favorably to 'Unbroken', 'All Is Lost', or even something like 'Cast Away'.
In one of the more harrowing dialogue scenes, one man turns to another and says, "They'll check every square mile out here. It'll take a while but they'll do it. Won't they?" More to stave off his own madness of the possibility of never being searched for, let alone found, he speaks for them all. If you have enjoyed those movies I mentioned above, then I would check this one out as well. Very inspiring and moving. Another huge surprise watch. I always love when I find a movie I have never heard of that turns out to be better than 90% of the ones I have!
