'March of the Penguins/On the Wings of Penguins'
(Morgan Freeman / 2-DVD / NR / 2009 / Warner Bros.)

Overview: Coming from a French director, Luc Jacquet, the miraculous MARCH OF THE PENGUINS would have to be a love story. And so it is. The film explores the mating rituals of the emperor penguin, one of the most resilient animals on earth.

DVD Verdict: This has to be one of the best nature documentries ever made.I say best because it grabbed the attention and admiration of so many people. There are so many species on this Earth of ours and each is interesting in its own way.

Who knows why Penguins are so interesting to people? One day, while attending a presentation by the late Roger Tory Peterson, the world's most famous Birdwatcher, I remember someone asked him what was his favorite bird. Everyone listened intently for his answer and fully understood his reply, when he said, "The one I'm looking at, at the time."

I suppose that everyone who sees this documentry looks at it from their own perspective. A child is enthralled,a parent sees it from a parenting perspective, a nature lover sees it from another perspective, a photographer, from another angle, and on and on.

As an avid birder it just adds to the whole experience of Birdwatching. It was not brought out in the movie, but the Emperor is only one of the 17 species of Penguins and they all have different lifestyles. Although Dr.Peterson didn't single out any particular bird in his answer; I suspect that the Family of Penguins was particularly close to his heart. In more than a dozen expeditions to the Antarctic and the islands that lie off the tips of the southern continents he felt privileged to observe all 17 species on their home ground, often on islands where few others have ever landed.

He brought all his skills as an author of bird guides,a renowned naturalist, conservationist and enviromentalist,a superb artist and photographer together and produced a marvellous book on Penguins; and created one of the great books on birds. If you enjoyed this movie; you will find this book fascinating.

I asked the question as to why so many people were so fascinated with Penguins and the only reason that I can come up with is they kind of remind us of ourselves. They just seem to stand around, march around, frolic, wait, and sort of give the impression that something is going to happen and they don't want to miss it. Isn't that a lot like us? With Emperor penguins they also seem to be all dressed up for some formal function and are not sure where or when its going to take place;but they're ready and waiting.

This release includes the bonus program 'ON THE WINGS OF PENGUINS.' The gift-set freebie is an all-new feature-length documentary, AND the box also includes a plush African penguin toy and some collectible postcards! 'On the Wings of a Penguin' is a fascinating look at the lives and adventures of another breed of penguin: the African penguin. With the dedication of people devoted to their survival, this warm-weather species (also known as “jackass penguins”) thrives and inspires the joy of living. This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:

On the Wings of a Penguin: Documentary revealing the lives and adventures of the African penguin.(NEW!)
National Geographic’s Crittercam: Emporer Penguins: Penguins diving and feeding
