'Dinosaur Train: Buddy's Halloween Adventure'
(DVD / NR / 2014 / PBS)

Overview: Buddy and his family take a special trip on the Night Train to learn abut animals that are nocturnal.

DVD Verdict: Dinosaur Train is, as its heart, a tale of friendly dinosaurs who climb aboard a train to visit different times throughout the prehistoric age, learning about dinosaurs and having fun adventures.

Indeed, Dinosaur Train completely changes how kids learn about dinosaurs. Finally, all the mistakes I was taught as a kid are repaired! Dinosaurs use tails for balance, have proper names, sometimes are tiny, have feathers, fly, are birds, swim, hunt, etc.

Mix in some really well done music and clear, quality animation, and you've got a great show. Best of all is a moment after each episode with a real paleontologist who clears up fact from fiction and even gives great details about what was learned in the cartoon - finally, a TV show is using standard teaching methods like reinforcement and repetition without boring us to death!

In this Halloween special, once Buddy and his family are on the Night Train they also get to hop off and take a fun nature walk under the full moon where they discover an entire skeleton of a Jurassic dinosaur. They also visit a "haunted house" for a spooky party! Then they learn all about "Gourd Day" - a Mesozoic Halloween where Larry Lambeosaurus shows the Pteranodon family how to hollow out the gourds and carve faces into them!

Haunted Roundhouse
Big Pond Pumpkin
