'ZZ Top: Live at Montreux 2013'
(ZZ Top / DVD / NR / 2014 / Eagle Eye Media)

Overview: With an unchanged line-up stretching back to 1969 and global album sales in excess of 50 million, ZZ Top continue to delight fans around the world with brilliant live concerts and great music. The band has made a number of visits to Montreux over the years and this concert from the 2013 Festival is undoubtedly one of their finest live performances.

DVD Verdict: Packaged in much the same vein as a Blu ray would be - very interestingly created, indeed - what you get with 'ZZ Top: Live at Montreux 2013' is everything you expect to get. Nothing more, nothing less, but a little something new.

As we all know by now, ZZ Top are an American rock band that formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. The band comprises guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons, bassist and co-lead vocalist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard. One of the few major label recording groups to have held the same line-up for more than forty years, ZZ Top has been praised by critics and fellow musicians alike for their technical mastery.

Here on their 'Live at Montreux 2013' set, the songs they play - much like their live tour this year with Jeff Beck will pan out to show also, one imagines - blends tracks from early seventies albums (Tres Hombres, and the always-brilliant Fandango) through their eighties blockbuster period (Eliminator and Afterburner) and up to their most recent, and not all that brilliant release La Futura.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 as a group, ZZ Top possesses 11 gold records and 7 platinum (13 multi platinum!) records. And so why not kick the whole shebang off with a classic in 'Got Me Under Pressure.' They back that with their live mesh of 'Waitin' For The Bus' / 'Jesus Just Left Chicago,' before heading into a lively 'Gimmie All Your Lovin,' a fun 'Pincushion' (which I hadn't heard in a long, long time), and then two songs from their latest blues roots La Futura album, 'I Gotsta Get Paid' (a cover of '25 Lighters' by DJ DMD) and 'Flyin' High.'

This powerhaus performance then changes gears as the band - along with some friends - pays tribute to the festival's founder, Claude Nobs (February 4, 1936 – January 10, 2013). Featuring Hammond organ player Mike Flanigin and guitarist Van Wilks sitting in with the Texans, 'Kiko' and 'I Loved The Woman' are brought forth, and are immediately backed by an incredible, out-of-the-blue cover of the Jimi Hendrix Experience classic, 'Foxey Lady.'

'My Head's In Mississippi' gets us back on the Texas trail once again, with the last track to be played from La Futura 'Chartreuse' backing it. Indeed, without breaking a beat, let alone (seemingly) a sweat, the live show is brought to a close with en masse of old school cuts: 'Sharp Dressed Man,' 'Legs,' 'Tube Snake Boogie,' and then both 'La Grange' and 'Tush.'

Also included on this great new DVD is an interview with Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill and a featurette on Billy Gibbons talking about the Montreux Jazz Festival. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
