'Appleseed: Alpha' [Blu-ray]
(Blu ray / PG-13 / 2014 / Sony Pictures)

Overview: Left to survive in a post-World War society, two mercenary soldiers - Deunan and her cyborg partner Briareos – are sent on a mission on the outskirts of their war-torn city. During the operation, they run into Iris and Olson, two citizens from the utopian city of Olympus, who might have a way to save the world but the ruthless Talos and the scheming warlord Two Horns have their own plans.

Blu ray Verdict: 'Appleseed Alpha' is not my usual cup o' tea when it comes to movies to watch / review, but after all its hype I wanted to check it out for myself. Having not seen anything else from the franchise gave my eyes a clean slate into the series, but from what I was told by my viewing partner 'Appleseed: Alpha' is indeed what one would expect from watching the other recent releases in the franchise.

For those not in the know it has a lot of fast-paced, action-driven scenes with, well, to my mind only perhaps given the genre, over-the-top choreography! As my viewing partner noted, it was great to see Briareos and Deunan back in action doing what they do best. [No, he shouldn't have written this review as he's only 14!] The animation style, in general was very good to my eyes, the dialogue pretty damn decent, and the themes are in line with previous releases (according to, well, you know who!).

Having read the press release what I can also confidently add is that this new Appleseed adventure is from world-renowned anime filmmaker Shinji Aramaki ('Starship Troopers: Invasion') and under his directorship this latest installment in the sci-fi adventure franchise (based on the original comic books by Shirow Masamune re: 'Ghost in the Shell') is already garnering high praise from all corners of the globe.

All in all 'Appleseed: Alpha' is a great movie with some excellent anime and with something always happening to keep your attention, it is definitely one to put on repeat. That said, if you don't have one add a more-than-decent surround sound system to your Blu ray player as that will bump up your enjoyment ten fold!

I say that because in addition to showcasing the latest in state-of-the-art CGI technology, this animated film also features a killer soundtrack with 12 songs from today’s top international music artists, including: Yasutaka Nakata (CAPSULE), Skrillex & Alvin Risk, androp, CAPSULE, DJ FUMIYA (RIP SLYME), PASSEPIED, Q;indivi+, tofubeats, AKLO, 80KIDZ, nishi-ken, and RAM RIDER. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
