'Dynasty: Season 8, Vol. 1 & 2' (2-Pack)
(John Forsythe, Michael Nader, John James, Gordon Thomson, Joan Collins, et al / 7-Disc DVD / NR / 2014 / CBS - Paramount)

Overview: Explore the conflicts, passions, drives, and tensions of the Carringtons, a powerful, rich, and greedy oil family, as they struggle to maintain their position of wealth and power in the world here in 'Dynasty: Season 8.'

DVD Verdict: In truth, sorry, but this eighth season of 'Dynasty' was most certainly not the greatest year in the show's history! Indeed, the season started in the fall of 1987 and ABC only ordered 22 shows, down from the 30 or 34 episodes ordered from the previous years. Gone from the cast was Diahann Carroll, whom the writers couldn't come up with any story ideas for and the fact Aaron Spelling couldn't afford to pay her high salary!

Coming in at a paltry #33 in the Nielsen Ratings with a rating of 14.33, 'Dynasty' started to air an hour earlier. Much of the fun this season focused on Alexis' new relationship with a mystery man Sean Rowan, a sexy and hunky man who could make wallpaper peal but whose acting was simplistic at best. Taking a cue from Joan Collin's personal life that year (she had divorced her younger husband who nearly left her broke) the writer's wrote a story where Alexis is manipulated into allowing this man control of her finances while he plotted to kill her!

Characters from the cancelled Colby series also returned. Such as the sexy John James and beautiful Emma Samms as Jeff and Fallon. Although, and much like the whole Diahann Carroll situation, the payment for Charlton Heston to reappear in several episodes obviously became to much of a monetary burden as he was subsequently reduced to just being mentioned sometimes!

In the two-part season opener 'The Siege,' Matthew Blaisdel has returned to get Krystle back and has taken over the Carrington home with help from some Peruvian mercenaries. Alexis is saved from drowning by a mysteriously handsome stranger. Jeff finds Fallon after she disappeared in the Mojave desert.

In 'The Aftermath,' Blake is asked to run for governor. Steven is dealing with the way he ended the hostage situation and Fallon opens up to Jeff about her UFO encounter! In 'The Bracelet,' Alexis has been shot at the start of a live debate and has instantly become a heroine in the public eye. Steven is unhappy about Jeff spending so much time with Sammy Jo and surrogate Karen Atkinson learns her husband never signed their divorce papers.

In 'The Trial,' the custody trial concerning Adam's child begins. When Leslie learns Jeff is divorced and living on his own, she decides to move in with him. Steven and Fallon work together to clear their fathers name in Natumbe and Krystle is suffering from mysterious headaches.

And in the season finale, 'Colorado Roulette,' Adam is absolved of suspicion in the kidnapping of his son when Leslie calls him to say that Sean has taken the baby and is holding her captive. Finding the location of the call through a wire tap, Adam and Steven hurry to the desolate mountain cabin. They find Leslie badly beaten, but Sean has already taken off with the baby.

Oh, and just so you are brought fully up to scratch here, after 9 seasons and 218 episodes on ABC, the show was cancelled! Two years later, ABC aired a 4 hour mini-series, 'Dynasty: The Reunion,' to wrap up the loose ends of the series, which ended with an unresolved cliffhanger. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.77:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
