'Texas Killing Fields'
(Sam Worthington, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jessica Chastain, Chloe Grace Moretz, et al / DVD / R / (2011) 2012 / Anchor Bay Entertainment)

Overview: Inspired by true events, this tense and haunting thriller follows Detective Souder (Sam Worthington), a homicide detective in a small Texan town, and his partner, transplanted New York City cop Detective Heigh (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they track a sadistic serial killer dumping his victims' mutilated bodies in a nearby marsh locals call "The Killing Fields."

DVD Verdict: This film, please know from the off, is long, sometimes tiring on the eyes, slow moving - and yet compeling, enthralling and something you cannot ever dream you'll turn your eyes away from for fear of missing something!

Loosely inspired by actual events, 'Texas Killing Fields' starts off rather slowly, as noted, but gradually evolves into an engrossing crime drama - with twists! Featuring some excellent, shockingly effective (especially come the end) action sequences, it will not be for everyone, but is sure to bring a cinematic round of applause from oh-so-many. Apparently, over many decades, there has been a series of unsolved murders on a large piece of swampland, located between Houston, Texas and the Gulf Coast. The killings remain unsolved, in part, because police departments in different jurisdictions, for whatever reasons, did not share information.

Anyway, in this fictional screenplay, written by Donald F. Ferrarone and directed by Ami Canaan Mann (director Michael Mann's daughter), small town Texas cops Sam Worthington, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jessica Chastain are after a serial killer who is murdering young women and dumping their bodies in the swampland. Unlike with the real life homicides, they do solve their case, but there are still a couple of intriguing, and quite surprising red herrings along the way!

In closing, 'Texas Killing Fields' is chock full of incredible, first-rate performances, even if some of the character's motivations are not apparent in the script. Watch it today, talk about it tomorrow. This is a Widescreen Presentation (2.35:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
