'Foyle's War: The Home Front Files Sets 1-6'
(Michael Kitchen, Anthony Howell, Honeysuckle Weeks, et al / 22-Disc DVD / Not Rated / (2011) 2013 / Acorn Media)

Overview: One of the most highly acclaimed and popular programs on PBS has arrived in a value-priced collection with 22 highly-entertaining mysteries in 'Foyle's War: The Home Front Files (Sets 1-6).' Michael Kitchen stars as DCS Christopher Foyle, who investigates crimes on the home front as WWII rages.

DVD Verdict: For those not in the know, 'Foyle's War' is a British detective drama television series set during and shortly after World War II. It was actually created by screenwriter and author Anthony Horowitz, and commissioned by ITV (UK) after the long-running series 'Inspector Morse' had come to an end (2000). Indeed, it has aired on ITV since 2002.

In truth, it was actually brought to a close in 2007 by director of television Simon Shaps, but positive public demand and a number of complaints about the cancellation prompted ITV to revive the series after its sixth series. This actually proved to be a ratings success too!

'Foyle's War' gives us a personal look at the British Home Front war-life through life-attached topics, compelling suspense, and even some black comedic moments along the way (something that I myself was not expecting!). It is set between 1940 and 1945 and with the English WWII involvement and resulting life-style of the population away from the active war front, when all England expects is an eminent invasion from Germany, well, edge of your seat stuff it most surely can be.

And so, all that's left is to pay mention to the three main characters: Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) is a police officer who would rather be fighting up the front, not investigating Hastings crime. Milner (Anthony Howell) does pretty much all of Foyle's running around, which is "funny" in that he has an artificial limb! And the female driver, Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks) is just plain beautiful and has a smile that could melt butter!

Screenwriter and Author Anthony Horowitz suggested on his website that 'Foyle's War' will return for an eighth series in 2013. It was later confirmed by ITV that three episodes had been commissioned for 2013.So, great news to be had there, for sure! Indeed, those three episodes were filmed in Ireland and London accordingly. These are all Full Screen Presentations (1:85.1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:

Exclusive interviews with series writer and creator Anthony Horowitz and stars Anthony Howell and Honeysuckle Weeks, making-of documentaries, production notes, historical backgrounds, cast reflections, notes on a real-life Foyle, photo gallery, and cast filmographies.
