'The Groundhogs: Live at the Astoria'
(The Groundhogs / DVD / NR / 2012 / Eagle Eye Media)
Overview: Filmed at London's Astoria on February 20th 1998, this was the first complete Groundhogs live show ever to be filmed.
DVD Verdict: Oh dear. Being a Groundhogs fan for almost 40 years I finally appreciate this release of their first ever recorded performance ... BUT it should have been done with much better recording equipment. Recommended only for the hard cores fans 'The Groundhogs: Live at the Astoria' is one big failure from start to finish! Terrible, simply terrible video, anyone who saw them live during their heyday would not be impressed with this new release, sadly.
But, just to allow you to make your own mind up, the band were touring in support of their album Hogs In Wolf's Clothing, their tribute to the great Howlin' Wolf. The concert begins and ends with tracks from that album, but also features songs spanning their illustrious carer. Featuring a line-up of: Tony (T.S.) McPhee - guitars & vocals, Eric Chipulina - bass, Pete Correa - drums, the set list was: 'Introduction,' 'Shake For Me,' 'Eccentric Man,' '3744 James Road,' 'I Want You To Love Me,' 'Split Part 1,' 'Split Part 2,' 'Mistreated,' 'Still A Fool,' 'Cherry Red,' 'Groundhog Blues,' and lastly 'Down In The Bottom.' This is a Full Screen Presentation (1.33:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
