'Hallowed Ground'
(Jamie Alexander, et al / DVD / NR / 2007 / Genius Products)

Overview: After she becomes stranded in a small town, a young woman (Jaimie Alexander, 'Rest Stop') discovers her arrival there was foretold a century earlier by the town's founding preacher and that she is an integral part of his impending - and terrifying - rebirth.

DVD Verdict: Hailed as one of the new generation of "scream queens” by USA Today, Jaimie Alexander stars in the DVD debut of 'Hallowed Ground.' Starring alongside Brian McNamara ('Arachnophobia'), and Hudson Leick ('Xena: Warrior Princess'), this horror much in the vein of 'Jeepers Creepers' and most undoubtedly the cult classic 'Children of the Corn' is the directorial debut of David Benullo ('Around the World in 80 Days').

Complete with bone-chilling suspense and unforgettable gory images,'Hallowed Ground' tells the tale of a town built on hallowed ground. Founded in 1896 by a fanatical preacher, the town of Hope (yeah, right!) they have found that to protect the harvest and livelihood of their town from Satan’s evil powers, that the act of said preacher sacrificing the town’s sinners by crucifying them on the cross was one that granted them great benefit.

But, when the town turns against him, it leads to his ultimate demise. A century later, a young woman (Alexander) finds herself stranded in the town of Hope. She soon discovers her arrival there was foretold by the town’s founding preacher and that she is an integral part of his impending - and terrifying – rebirth. Sure that's a wicked build up, and sure there are parts of this film that leave no surprises to the imagination, but that said the flick is well-directed and manages to keep the pace up with well-punctuated deaths and murders.

So, if you like religious-themed mayhem, ghoulish scarecrows, rough CGI-created ravens, and/or Alexander's abs, then 'Hallowed Ground' is recommended for the price of a rental! This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs, but does not (unfortunately) come with any Special Features.
