'Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny'
(Jack Black, Kyle Gass, et al / DVD / R / (2006) 2007 / New Line)

Overview: This is the story of a friendship that changes the course of rock history forever, of the fateful collision of minds between JB and KG that led to the creation of the precedent-shattering band Tenacious D, and of the two heroes' quest to find the fabled Guitar Pick Of Destiny!

DVD Verdict: What is left to say about a big-screen rock opera that features Jack Black as a child singing his first song about raping a dragon, Meatloaf as his uber-religious father, and a flaming Dio poster come to life in just the opening sequence? Awesome, my friends!

This is the only rock movie I've ever seen that is even worthy of tuning "This is Spinal Tap"'s violin. Jack Black was on the right track with "School of Rock", but that was kid's stuff. This is the real deal, people; this is what rock music is all about. If you don't know who Tenacious D are: a) I feel bad for you, b) Seriously, what's wong with you?, and c) You've really been missing out.

How much you like this film will depend on how much you like the D. If you aren't initiated, enter at your own risk because this is some insane rockin' that has been know to make heads explode and girlfriends whine about how stupid it is. The film uncovers the mysterious origins of this legendary band and the journey that solidified their friendship as they search for the guitar pick that gave rise to the likes of Van Halen, AC/DC, and original bluesman Robert Johnson. It is an epic tale that culminates in Cage and Jables attempting to do the impossible: outrock the devil himself (best showdown ever!).

Can it be done? Will the Pick of Destiny allow the D to take their place among the greats? Can Kyle Gass stop chasing girls long enough to complete the quest ("It's sex, drugs, THEN rock & roll. In that order.")? And what's with that psychadelic 'shroom sequence with a flying sasquatch and the strawberry river? You must watch the film to find out. The special features include half an hour of great deleted scenes, an option to jump straight to your favorite musical numbers - of which there will be many, and commentary tracks, one featuring the D themselves as well as a music video and some featurettes.

This here is a DVD done right. Pervasive profanity and crude humor fly left and right in both the dialogue and the music so I don't have to tell you to cover the kids' ears for this one. This is the kind of film that will never get the recognition it deserves, but it is destined be a cult classic for decades to come; and for those who only know Jack Black from his more mainstream (read: boring) films, this is a good chance to see his real talent and where he came from. And if you're a true fan of Tenacious D or rock cinema, buy this DVD without hesitation. "Now go, my son, and rock!" This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Feature of:

Commentary by: Jack Black and Kyle Gass
